    Minimum room size for Summits

We are moving and are just beginning to consider which house to buy. I have had my Summits in a room approximately 22' x 14', but--so far, anyway--I haven't found any homes that meet our other needs and also offer a dedicated listening room of this or greater size. So, how small is too small? At...

    Vertical location of instruments

Okay, it's time once again to expose my ignorance (or, positively spun, my curiosity). From the start, I noticed that instruments (particularly those located to the left or right side of the soundstage) did not all appear to emanate from the same height on my Summit panels. In fact, the...

    Cardas jumpers?

Does anyone here have experience using either the Cardas jumper cables or jumper plates? I am wondering how significantly they might affect (improve, hopefully) the sound of my Summits. See pics and descriptions at: http://www.cardas.com/content.php?area=oem&content_id=13&pagestring=Jumpers

    CHEAP Classical LPs in DC!

I have just come from American University, where my son is a student. The library is selling off hundreds of mostly classical LPs for only $3 per sackload. In my case, that amounts to approximately 15 cents per LP! It's a great opportunity if you're in the area.

    Something I've never understood...

Okay, I'll admit my ignorance. Why should a CD (or any other digital format) transport make a difference? When I install a program on the computer from a CD or when I transfer large digital files via CD-R, there are almost never any errors (e.g., dropping every 11th bit). It would be intolerable...

My Stereo is Making Me Fat!

Well, not exactly fat; "unfit" would be more accurate. The sorry truth is that ever since I bought the Summits, I have found it incredibly difficult to invest what little spare time I have in exercising. Listening carefully to music is an inherently sedentary pursuit, especially with the stats'...

    Thiel now at Audio Advisor

I got an email message announcing that Audio Advisor is now selling the Thiel line. I suppose I can understand what Thiel stands to gain by this move, but I have to feel sorry for their dealers. I know we have several audio retailers on this board, although I don't know if they carry Thiel along...

    Even nothing is sometimes something

I finally did what lots of people have recommended and what I always assumed would prove a useful upgrade: I put in two dedicated 20 amp circuits with "audiophile-grade" outlets. The result? Everything sounds pretty much the same. Despite the fact that I cannot hear any (certain, verifiable)...

    In praise of subwoofers

A few weeks ago I started a "to sub or not to sub?" thread, asking users about the advisability of adding a sub to my Summits. (I had tried a couple of pretty good subs but wasn't satisfied with the result.) The consensus seemed to be that it was worthwhile assuming that one purchased a good...

    Hardwood floors and spikeless speakers

Hi, all. We are going to put hardwood floors in the living/listening room in a few months, and I am gradually putting felt or plastic pads on the bottoms of all of the furniture. (I happened to be at a Lowe's today, so I picked up some of these.) I've been used to using spikes with my various...

To sub or not to sub, that is the question

I am still trying to figure out whether it would be better to add a sub to my Summits. I tried using one or two ACI Titans with the Summits, and I wasn't altogether pleased with the results. The Titans are quite good subs--not at all boomy, so that isn't the issue. Still, it seemed like I was...

    Your favorite audio dealer

Over the years I've read a lot of complaints about audio dealers, many apparently well justified. I can't recall reading a thread dedicated to giving credit to excellent dealers. Also, I do a fair bit of travelling and would like to hear about dealers in other parts of the country/world that you...

You know you're an audiophile if...

The debate about what constitutes audiophilia in the recent just-how-pathetic-a-minority-are-we? thread got me thinking about an alternative approach, a la Jeff Foxworthy. So, without further ado, I'll submit the first ten answers: You know you’re an audiophile if… …you own a power cord that...

Connecting the ESL and Subwoofer(s) in Hybrids

I see that a number of you have used speaker wire of various makes to connect the ESL panel to the subwoofer(s) of your ML hybrid. If so, what improvements did you find over the supplied jumper clips/plates? Is this a worthwhile tweak? If so, did you find a particular brand and/or type of wire...

Anyone with PS Audio Power Plant Premier experience?

Have any of you tried the Power Plant Premier with you system? If so, I'd be grateful to hear what you think. The whole power conditioning thing is something of a black art to me, and I'd appreciate having the chance to benefit from your experience and knowledge on this topic. Thanks, Craig

Differences among ML center channel speakers?

Hi, all. I am giving some thought to buying a ML center channel speaker, but I don't know the differences between the Cinema I (are there others?), the Motif and the Stage. Can you fill me in? Thanks, Craig

First impressions of the new Summits

Most of the people reading this post will already have had considerable experience with MLs in general and the Summit in particular, so I’ll keep my comments relatively brief. Left unchecked, I’m sure I could write pages. As expected, my pair of Summits (dealer floor models) arrived Tuesday...

Will soon get my first MLs

Hi, everyone. I was very pleased to find the ML Club site this evening. I have been interested in planar speakers for many years, having owned early Maggies and Carver Amazing Silvers. More recently, I've been using a pair of Gallo Reference 3.1 speakers, which are terrific for their size and...
