Flat panels?

Just attended a Connecticut Audio Society meeting where a member had DIY'd a pair of speakers using what were presented as M-L stat panels but they were flat, approximately 15" x 36", black perf with vertical spars. While personally not familiar with any M-L product utilizing a flat panel, was interested in knowing IF they were ever offered and any other background that might be available.
