M1 - Study hard... but the tougest part is getting used to the new routine. The course load isn't tough.
M2 - Study efficiently... the course load is tougher, but by now you should be used to the study patterns/habits you learned from first year.
Step 1 - Study throughout the year, do questions and use Kaplan Qbank. Do the 2200 twice over.
Goal = 220+ to be competitive for Family Practice, Anesthesia, EM, Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Neurology. 230+ for Ortho, ENT, Opthalmology, Radiology. 240+ for Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Dermatology.
M3 - Do well on rotations, do well on shelf exams to Honor/High Pass.
Step 2 - DESTROY this test, especially if you did below what you expected on Step 1! If you're able to get the scores from Step 2 back before interview during your 4th year, you can use them to your advantage. Step 2 is NOT required to get interviews, but Step 2 is favored over Step 1 when programs rank you!!
***IMPORTANT FACT***
M4 - Find the specialty that interests you, go on interviews, do electives... relax... and wait for Match Day and Graduation Day.

Study hard, but play hard. Get into some sort of hobby - whether it be Martin Logan speakers and audio or working out, running, swimming. Find a passion outside medical school and pursue it. You WILL become VERY isolated at times (several times and maybe even a good part of the year) and there will be many times where you feel completely DISSOCIATED from the world.
I recall looking out the window of the 10th floor of our school at 1am during a study break and seeing the entire Chicago skyline.... I recall looking at the people walking the streets below and the cars whiz by... it's lonely and isolating. Be sure to make many friends and stick with each other. It's a tough road, but it's something all of us overcome.
If you need help, PM me... I'm an M4... I know what you'll be going through.
BTW, I am ranking MCOW EM program high on my list (Top 2 or 3).... so don't be surprised if I see you there this July.
