Post Script - I've really, really been trying to avoid some audio porn sites like The Tape Project and J-Corder lately because I've recently developed an abiding interest (fetish?) in Reel-to-Reel tape decks. I think that a Technics RS-1520 would set me right. Must resist the temptation. How's THAT for an "obsolete" technology?
Tim, that's the stuff of wet dreams !

You indicated on another thread that pre-recorded tapes are easily available, so I was wondering about the format in which they are available: 1/4 track, 1/2 track, 7.5/15/30 ips ?

For serious sound you need 1/2 track at 15 ips at least

Have a look at tapeproject.com

Whoa!

Seriously OT my freinds :D

Back to bits and the future of music containers.

Anybody using FLAC as their 'mastering' format?

I'm finally giving up on WAV and using FLAC only.

I love FLAC because:
  • It's lossless :p
  • It handles metadata (album, artist, track info, etc.)
  • It supports multiple channels (up to 8)
  • Many playback devices support it natively

I just did, and am astounded at the prices - $500 for a single tape, or $3,000 for 10

You want the best sound bar none? One must pay!

Although at those prices, that's probably why we are loving talking about it, but none of use actually have it!!

Yep - I'm solely dBPowerAmp/Plextor encoded FLAC now as well, although I do have a small amount of legacy ALAC (I bought an iPod before my Squeezebox).

FLAC is great, but I do have an intense disdain for the amount of time it takes to convert to ALAC or MP3 for portable use. I just wish Apple would get with the programme and support FLAC (and put halfway decent sized hard disks in their stupid iPods (eg. 320 or 500 GB), because as 2009 draws to a close, forcing me to keep two independent music libraries is beyond unacceptable.

Agreed. I sent 'em feedback via their web site, but it probably went to /dev/null. I guess you could do likewise...

What bugs me is that FLAC is a free algorithm. It's not even as if Apple have the excuse of wanting to avoid patent royalties, 'cause there aren't any!

B&W's Definitive Guide to 24bit FLAC

Continuing this discussion re streaming hi-res tracks, here's a great discussion from B&W, entitled The Definitive Guide to 24bit FLAC... http://blog.bowers-wilkins.com/lab/?p=262

Very well written. Also, their "Society for Sound" looks quite interesting. Has anybody signed up? Any recommendations for particular albums?

With Tower Records going by the wayside it is impossible to find any decent music in local outlets, i.e., mall record stores, Best Buy, Wal-Mart. Unless you are into rap, hip-hop or bubble gum pop your only choice is to order online. I will be scouring Amazon tonight and tomorrow to capitalize on Cyber Monday deals.

ive been using flac for about 6yrs now. i used .shn when i first startd taping, but after i switched to flac i remastered all my tapes to flac. since then i have gone through a variety of software apps, but after finding flaws in most PC programs i have settled on foobar 2k as a player and converter. its the least resource intensive, most reliable, bit-perfect, & has all the bells and whisles need to convert and tag anything. in the live audio recording world flac has been a standard since the first release hit the ground. Love it!:rocker:

IMHO the reason apple doesnt move to flac is their love of propietary file types. they are control freaks with their hardware, and thats is the primary reason why i refuse to buy apple.

one problem i am having is getting my denon upstairs that is networked (via cat5) to play the flac files. it sees them but wont play them...not huge deal but it would be nice to have access to all my music while i cook or hang out anywhere other than the man cave.

One word... Squeezebox!

I don't care about the Ipod....i just wish Apple's itunes or
Amazon would allow me to order music in FLAC. I haven't
downloaded anything since it would only be played on my
home setup. I'd love to be able to buy individual songs
without ordering the entire CD. I've emailed and called
Apple to suggest providing the highest available format
but they almost seem clueless about sound quality.

i know your right but the network ability coupled with the flac playback was a huge selling point for me when i got this unit, i want what i paid for damn it!;)

and Mantana, do you really think a company that has killed sound quality via ipods w/ over compressed mp3s and crappy ear buds really cars about sound quality? they have lead this generation down the path of horrible sonics all packaged in a nice pocket sized piece of plastic, and for that im not forgiving them.

The Ipod's a good alternative to the Walkman...but,
when i listen to music i want high quality...that means
the home setup. I also need some downtime to give my
ears a rest...sure don't want to plug an Ipod in my ears
and listen to music 'round the clock.

Check out the iMods on the HeadFi site. You can get a pretty good sounding system to fit in the palm of your hand with a good set of head phones. Ken from ALO & 32 ohm has some really cool portable Hi-Fi toys.

What a sec...Apple never invented MP3 -they just capitalized on it.

I myself was raised on a Sony walk-man and mix tapes...20 yrs later and right now I am listening to a full ML theater powered by a Bryston 9bsst2/Denon Processor playing a Blu-ray David Gilmour Concert.

If anything the tapes (which are much much worse in SQ to MP3's) allowed my inner audiophile to blossom into the raging fidelity obsessed maniac I have become.

So in short, don't hate the kids and there iPods....grab them and load em up with GOOD quality MP3's and take every chance you have to sit them in front of your HiFi to show them what music done right can do.

i never said they invented mp3s. but they have made poor sound quality the standard to the up and coming generations.

...and yes i try to convert anyone i can to the way of the hifi.
