I just listened to Diana Krall's version of this one last night, a stunning interpretaion of an incredible song...

Just before our love got lost you said,
I am as constant as a northern star.
And I said, Constantly in the darkness
Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar.
On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue TV screen light
I drew a map of Canada
Oh Canada
With your face sketched on it twice
Oh, you are in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would still be on my feet
Oh I would still be on my feet.

Oh, I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
I'm frightened by the devil
And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid
I remember that time you told me, you said,
Love is touching souls,
Surely you touched mine
'Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time
Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you, darling
Still be on my feet
I would still be on my feet

I met a woman
She had a mouth like yours
She knew your life
She knew your devils and your deeds
And she said,
Go to him, stay with him if you can
But be prepared to bleed
Oh but you are in my blood
You're my holy wine
You're so bitter, bitter and so sweet
Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling
Still I'd be on my feet
I would still be on my feet.

Joni Mitchell
"A Case of You"

There is no version of this song that doesn't tug at my heart strings...

The Moon's a Harsh Mistress
By Jimmy Webb

See her how she flies
Golden sails across the sky
Close enough to touch
But careful if you try
Though she looks as warm as gold
The moon's a harsh mistress
The moon can be so cold

Once the sun did shine
Lord, it felt so fine
The moon a phantom rose
Through the mountains and the pines
And then the darkness fell
And the moon's a harsh mistress
It's so hard to love her well

I fell out of her eyes
I fell out of her heart
I fell down on my face
Yes, I did, and I -- I tripped and I missed my star
God, I fell and I fell alone, I fell alone
And the moon's a harsh mistress
And the sky is made of stone

The moon's a harsh mistress
She's hard to call your own.

My Favorite funny song lyric...

I woke up this morning with a bad hangover and my penis was missing again.
This happens all the time; it's detachable.

This comes in handy a lot of the time; I can leave it home when I thnk it's gonna get me in trouble, or I can rent it out when I don't need it. But now and then I go to a party, get drunk, and the next morning, I can't, for the life of me, remember what I did with it. First I looked around my apartment, and I couldn't find it, so I called up the place where the party was, they hadn't seen it either. I asked them to check the medicine cabinet , 'cause for some reason, I leave it there sometimes, but not this time. So I told them if it pops up to let me know. I called a few people who were at the party, but they were no help either.

I was starting to get desperate I really don't like being without my penis for too long. It makes me feel like less of a man, and I really hate having to sit down every time I take a leak.

After a few hours of searching the house, and calling everyone I could think of, I was starting to get very depressed, so I went to the Kiev and ate breakfast. Then as I walked down Second Avenue, toward St Mark's Place, where all those people sell used books and other junk on the street, I saw my penis lying on a blanket next to a broken toaster oven - some guy was selling it!

I had to buy it off him. He wanted 22 bucks, but I talked him down to 17. I took it home, washed it off, and put it back on. I was happy again: complete.

People sometimes tell me I should get it permanently attached, but I don't know. Even though sometimes it's a pain in the ass, I like having a detachable penis.

King Missle
"Detachable Penis"

Leonard Cohen's "Sisters of Mercy":

And it won't make me jealous if I learn that they sweetend your night
We weren't lovers like that, and besides it would still be your right

Ah, yes...Pretty much anything from Mr. Leonard Cohen -- a great, great talent, IMHO.

I think my favorite may be Closing Time:

Ah we're drinking and we're dancing
and the band is really happening
and the Johnny Walker wisdom running high
And my very sweet companion
she's the Angel of Compassion
she's rubbing half the world against her thigh
And every drinker every dancer
lifts a happy face to thank her
the fiddler fiddles something so sublime
all the women tear their blouses off
and the men they dance on the polka-dots
and it's partner found, it's partner lost
and it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops:
it's CLOSING TIME
Yeah the women tear their blouses off
and the men they dance on the polka-dots
and it's partner found, it's partner lost
and it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops:
it's CLOSING TIME

Ah we're lonely, we're romantic
and the cider's laced with acid
and the Holy Spirit's crying, "Where's the beef?"
And the moon is swimming naked
and the summer night is fragrant
with a mighty expectation of relief
So we struggle and we stagger
down the snakes and up the ladder
to the tower where the blessed hours chime
and I swear it happened just like this:
a sigh, a cry, a hungry kiss
the Gates of Love they budged an inch
I can't say much has happened since
but CLOSING TIME

I swear it happened just like this:
a sigh, a cry, a hungry kiss
the Gates of Love they budged an inch
I can't say much has happened since
CLOSING TIME

I loved you for your beauty
but that doesn't make a fool of me:
you were in it for your beauty too
and I loved you for your body
there's a voice that sounds like God to me
declaring, declaring, declaring that your body's really you
And I loved you when our love was blessed
and I love you now there's nothing left
but sorrow and a sense of overtime
and I missed you since the place got wrecked
And I just don't care what happens next
looks like freedom but it feels like death
it's something in between, I guess
it's CLOSING TIME

Yeah I missed you since the place got wrecked
By the winds of change and the weeds of sex
looks like freedom but it feels like death
it's something in between, I guess
it's CLOSING TIME

Yeah we're drinking and we're dancing
but there's nothing really happening
and the place is dead as Heaven on a Saturday night
And my very close companion
gets me fumbling gets me laughing
she's a hundred but she's wearing
something tight
and I lift my glass to the Awful Truth
which you can't reveal to the Ears of Youth
except to say it isn't worth a dime
And the whole damn place goes crazy twice
and it's once for the devil and once for Christ
but the Boss don't like these dizzy heights
we're busted in the blinding lights,
busted in the blinding lights
of CLOSING TIME

The whole damn place goes crazy twice
and it's once for the devil and once for Christ
but the Boss don't like these dizzy heights
we're busted in the blinding lights,
busted in the blinding lights
of CLOSING TIME

Oh the women tear their blouses off
and the men they dance on the polka-dots
It's CLOSING TIME
And it's partner found, it's partner lost
and it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops
It's CLOSING TIME
I swear it happened just like this:
a sigh, a cry, a hungry kiss
It's CLOSING TIME
The Gates of Love they budged an inch
I can't say much has happened since
But CLOSING TIME
I loved you when our love was blessed
I love you now there's nothing left
But CLOSING TIME
I miss you since the place got wrecked
By the winds of change and the weeds of sex.

Come and listen to my story 'bout a man named Jed,
Poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed,
and then one day he was shootin' at some food,
and up from the ground came a bubbling crude,
oil...that is....
Well .......

Sorry I could not resist. Admit it...that was funny!

The Ballad of Jed Clampett, Flatt and Scruggs

It might seem crass at first blush, but if you hear the actual song with the slow bluesy progression it's about as sensual as the act it's describing...

So was seeing Spinal Tap do a 50's jazz version of "Big Bottom" last night!

One of the best: by The Smiths - "there is a light that never goes out"

And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine

This is one of my fave songs of all time as well! Listen to it on Youtube.... Perfect! more to come (great thread!)

another one of my faves: "and there will your heart be also - by Fields of the Nephilim

we must suffer
to free our pain
can you help us
to find our way
you're here to stay
stay here in paradise
I'd end this moment
to be with you
through morphic oceans
I'd lay here with you
only to stay
stay here in paradise
only to stay son
lonely from this maelstrom
free are you
from this maelstrom
to be with you

This is one of my favorite Goth bands that I know... Don't get scared, it is very good, beautiful music with alot of substance and emotion... Sounds great on the Logans as well!!! Check it out

ok, last one for tonight: "She" by Fields of the Nephilim

When the rain has gone
And I’ll wipe those tears away
Play the game with God
It’ll wash those years away
Tears have turned to ice
(turned to ice)
Feel you by my side
(hear you cry)
Want to hear you cry
(not alone tonight)
Not alone tonight
(by my side)
Where is she?
(where is she?)
Where is she?
(where is she?)
We were never really here
We are waiting for the rain here
And the rain will come
(gonna wipe those tears away)

Very powerful, slower, goth ballad (almost). great lyrics, great music - awesome band!

Metallica : Trapped Under Ice

I don't know how to live through this hell
Woken up, I'm still locked in this shell
Frozen soul, frozen down to the core
Break the ice, I can't take anymore

[chorus:]
Freezing
Can't move at all
Screaming
Can't hear my call
I am dying to live
Cry out
I'm trapped under ice

Crystallized, as I lay here and rest
Eyes of glass stare directly at death
From deep sleep I have broken away
No one knows, no one hears what I say

[Chorus]

Scream from my soul
Fate, mystified
Hell, forever more

Scream from my soul
Fate, mystified
Hell, forever more

No release from my cryonic state
What is this? I've been stricken by fate
Wrapped up tight, cannot move, can't break free
Hand of doom has a tight grip on me

this one only sounds good at thunderous volume levels!

"I don't wanna work, I just want to bang on the drums all day"

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

One of my all time favs from DSOTM, Pink Floyd, Time!

"Red Cadillac at sunset slowing down, for another look at that boarder town. Lowell George, Gringo."

"The pump don't work cause the vandals took the handles" (not sure if that's exactly right) Dylan.

"Click, Bang, What a hang. Your daddy just shot poor me!" Hendrix.

Just the first three that jumped into my head... Satch

"It's not funny when you see three cars you like...
And your pocket can only buy a three speed bike!"

-Run DMC

"The Prayer", by any of a number of singers:

We hope each soul will find
Another soul to love

Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage

"Stick it Out"

JOE:
I've got a better idea...
fvck me, you ugly son of a bitch
You ugly son of a bitch
fvck me, you ugly son of a bitch
Stick it out
Stick out yer hot curly weenie
Stick it out
Stick out yer hot curly weenie
Stick it out
Stick out yer hot curly weenie
Weenie.. .weenie, weenie, weenie!
Make it go fast
In and out,
Magical Pig
Make it go fast
In and out,
Magical Pig
Till it squirts, squirts, squirts, squirts
Fire
Till it squirts, squirts, squirts, squirts
Fire
Don't get no jizz upon that sofa, sofa
Don't get no jizz upon that sofa, sofa
Don't get no jizz upon that sofa, sofa
Don't get no jizz upon that sofa, sofa

Ha, ha... Love Zappa! You could devote a whole site to his lyrics, but you'd probably be laughing too hard to type.

Oh, the city she makes, sometimes your soul to feel floating just like a leaf in the wind
Street is stream so it carries you past present schemes, ah, there is no end
Left out in the alley no one catches you but the gentle wind
There ain't no Jane, no Jill, no Sally to see you through

from "Day Or Night" Lowell George and/or Bill Payne

Dr. Bernice

Baby don't you drive around with Dr. Bernice
She is not a lady doctor at all
She's got hands like a man
With hair on the back
She'll crush you with her embrace

Though the wind may whisper and moan sometimes
We all need a kind place to live
Though the wind may whisper and howl at your door
We all need the comfort of friends.

Baby don't you drive around with Dr. Bernice.
That ain't a real Cadillac.
It's a Delta 88 spray painted black
with fake leather seats from juarez

Though the wind may whisper and moan sometimes
On a hot desert night it is still
Though the world may whisper and howl at your door
You're not obliged to let them all in

Baby don't you drive ride in that faux Cadillac
If you must please ride in the back.
If you sing while you ride you'll be a siren tonight.
Spare this poor sailor's life from the rocks.

Though the wind may whisper a melody now.
We can't find a tune of our own.
Though the world may whisper and blow in your face
and tangle the hair on your head.

On a hot desert night
We can drive down the road
And the stars will spell out your name.
On a hot desert night with
the windows down wide.
The sirens will sing me their song.

And the ghosts of the sailors
who died on the rocks
Feel not a twitch of regret.
Though the wind may tangle the hair on your head.
You sing like a siren to me.

On a hot desert night
The caravan stops at the oasis next to your heart.
The soundtrack is played by some aged
British queen on BBC radio one.

Though the wind my whisper an epic sometime
the cast must include Karen Black.
Though the symphony strings shifts with the sand.
You sing like a siren to me.

You sing like a siren to me.
You sing like a siren to me
