I'm just trying to put some of this into perspective. Neither side is the enemy. We are all Americans and the more we fight each other the more we lose what once made this country great.

Which is why divisive politics can be so harmful to the country. And this year, we seem to have an excess of divisive politics on both sides of the aisle. Doesn't help that there is a swing vote Supreme Court justice appointment riding on the election outcome.

At the same time, saying "we are all Americans" belies the fact that there are many serious social divisions in this country -- business vs labor, racial minority vs racial majority, wealthy vs poor, religious vs non-religious, capitalist vs socialist, boomers vs millennials, authoritarian vs libertarian, and so many more. Tragedy seems to be the only thing that brings us together, and then only for a short time.

We can always find differences between people. The trick is finding common ground and working from there rather than finding ways to drive people apart.

This whole bathroom thing is a prime example of something that wasn't an issue that was on anyone's mind, but has become a great way to manipulate the masses and rile people up.

It doesn't matter what our opinions are on this matter. It really doesn't.

This is all a distraction. We have LOTS of real and important problems to deal with that affect us all, but we are down in the weeds rather than looking at the forest or even the trees. Meanwhile the forest is undergoing a huge transformation that the media and politicians are not giving air time.

I don't have to look like, agree with, have the same income as, or have the same faith as someone to feel empathy for them.

I'm not ashamed of anything about myself, but I also understand that I'm extremely lucky in life. I won the genetic lottery and was born into a family that valued education, athletics, varied interests and pushed me to succeed. I'm just barely still in my 40's, in a great marriage, in excellent health, self-employed doing something I love, living in an area I like, without debt, and have many interesting hobbies and sports.

The bottom line is that most of the crap that politicians spend their time arguing about won't affect me at all.

What bothers me is that there are huge issues that we as a country need to be tackling and this country is completely distracted by these really stupid mountain out of a mole hill issues.

I have never felt as discouraged about the future in my life as I do now.

The ideologues / extremists have created the chasm that currently exist (politically and socially) and it's not going to get any better.

To Norway 84. The "classified documents" are "alleged" charges and are still being investigated. Seems as if you believe they are true absent positive evidence and you are a very good example of this extremism and underscore / validate my above assertions. And after seven investigations into the Bengazi incident, the various committees were unable to find anything that Hillary did regarding troop deployment to defend the Embassy and subsequent loss of life. Do you still believe she's guilty (inaction caused loss of life) as charged?

PS: Just read the Don's tweet on the Egyptian airline crash last night. He "politicized" the tragedy (criticized the President) and expressed no empathy for the victims. Another example of extremism. One can only wonder what may happen if the Don is elected this fall.

Very well said, Mark and Gordon. I feel your pain and exasperation with the current state of affairs. But if history is our guide, things aren't really much worse than they ever were. If you read some historical accounts of U.S. politics a century ago, you will find similar infighting over similar issues, and just as much if not more vitriol and hatred. Progress comes in fits and starts, but even with all the social progress we have made over the last hundred years, not that much has changed in politics or society in general. The saddest thing to me is that, despite numerous historical examples from multiple countries of the devastating effects of electing narcissistic ego-driven populist leaders, who seek power by preaching hate and divisiveness, the general population still seems completely susceptible to it. It almost seems inevitable that we will get another Hitler/Mussolini/Stalin type of individual as president of the U.S. at some point. Ok, I'm depressing myself now so time to move on.

A sad commentary on how people see things today, but at least the family has a sense of humor.

I can respect someone who has a different opinion from me. My opinions have changed over the years and it is impossible that all of my current convictions can be 100% correct.

I don't respect someone who lowers themselves to personal attacks and name calling.

There are a lot of good people here who are at least friendly and get along even when they disagree.

Sounds like Norway has an anger issue and is unable to discuss diverse viewpoints in a civil manner.

Ideologue. Nuff said.

I watch the new and know her history for my proof.

You may watch the news, but apparently you don't remember it correctly. The accusation wasn't that Hillary "changed email headings" as you allege. It was that she instructed someone else to do so when they were having difficulties sending the material with a classified heading. The material consisted of political talking points and as of yet it hasn't even been shown to have contained any classified material. Further, the material was never actually sent by unsecured email. In other words, she told him to strip the secure headings and send it, but he never actually did that. The document was ultimately sent by secure fax. So you see, what appears in your eyes to be a huge scandal, is in actuality much ado over nothing. If you disagree with Hillary's politics, that's fine. But at least get your FACTS straight before you go bashing others for their beliefs.

I think the main reason Donald won't be elected has to do with him not being mentally stable.

Half of our US presidents have suffered from mental illness, be that bipolar, anxiety issues, depression, or something like alcoholism. So Trump wouldn't be alone. However in this modern age of instant communication someone with his proclivities would be a disaster to this country. Donald is very consistently a vindictive whiner who throws a fit when he doesn't get his way. His early AM tweets show his incredibly thin skin. He is way too needy and is constantly seeking the approval of others often to his detriment. In particular his need for approval has caused him to surround himself with yes men who help perpetuate his need to feel important.

As a side note, mental illness is much higher in entrepreneurs and being a businessman is a great fit for Donald, but unfortunately it is more at odds with him becoming a president than an asset.
