Just what you need! Another thread on the 2008 RMAF!!

First up are the German Physiks speakers (HRS 120) -- that's Steve sitting up front. I wasn't blown away by these - but they sure look cool

And before I post more pictures, let me add a few thoughts about the RMAF.

First off, what Tim and I are posting here represents less than HALF of the products and equipment on display at this show. There were something like 160+ rooms at this event spread over 2 hotels. So these posts are just a small sample of what was available.

Secondly (and Dave aka Twich54 will you tell you this too) most of this stuff all blended together after awhile. This industry had made tremendous strides in recent years. Lots of the dealers were presenting gear with top flight amps and pre-amps (awesome CD players as well). It was really, really tough to make accurate judgments after a 5-10 minute session in a A) small and untreated hotel room and B) source material that you didn't care for. Now, some rooms were treated with a few panels here and there. Other exhibitors rented out the larger conference rooms/suites. MBL, for example, had stuff in several rooms and their bigger speakers were in a very wide space.

Having said all of that - it was a lot of fun!!! Tim (and others in the midwest) should count their blessings that such an event is in their backyard!

Lansche Audio 4.1 with CORONA ion tweeter

Man, these were sweeeeeeet! And they better be for $56,000. The electronics were superb - WAVAC amps, pre-amp and phono stage (those three units, together, retail for $75,000). The turntable (Continuum Criterion) goes for 56k. You will see many, many vinyl setups in these pictures. For those that think vinyl is dead and gone - not so! Nearly every room was spinning the black pizza!

These particular speakers were something else. I would have to put them near the top of the list with respect to what I had time to listen to and take notes on.

EDIT!!!! I should point out that these cables (Dragon Shotgun Widowmakers) go for $36,000!!!

AVI duo

These (the floor standing models) go for around $2800/pair. The monitors on the stands (ADM - 9, I think) had built-in amps for the tweeters and woofers. Both were quite good, but I really like the AVI duos! They filled the room with a very warm, lush sound (his recording didn't hurt either - but the artist escapes me). Bass was no issue here at all!

As far as value goes - these were probably the speakers I heard at the show.

Tannoy and JBL

The JBLs (1400 Array) were driven with Bryston amps. Man, these things could pump the tunes with what seemed like zero effort. If you like the look (and sound) of horns - give JBL a look.

I didn't know this, but JBL has a rather large line of hi-end stuff.

Those long tubes near the speakers are actually room tuning devices. They are hollow (made by Argent) and the inspiration for the design was to use the same idea the Greeks used to tune their listening halls (they used large glass vases).

$53,000 for the pair. Interesting speakers to say the least.

Interesting [short] story behind these speakers. Apparently the maker of these speakers bought the drivers (made way back in the 1940s or '50s) ages ago from RCA. Initially they were supposed to be installed in movie theaters. In his eyes, these are some of the finest drivers ever built (and he only has 50 or so left). These speakers are made by hand from Pennsylvania hardwood. It takes the builder about a month to fabricate this particular unit.

Genesis

Genesis G5.3. Great looking and great sounding. I think everyone (Tim, Dave, etc) checked these out as well and we all loved how they sounded. I want to say they retail for $20-$25k.

Erik, very good comments! I didn't even get to visit all the rooms in the Marriot, let alone go over to the Hyatt.

Regarding the system here. I wasn't that enamoured with it. There were times when listening, that a musical note of some kind would seem to come from over my shoulder, rather than from where the performers should have been, which is in front.

In one of the rooms, they had some live music. This guy was actually quite good and played on an acoustic guitar that I have never seen before.

Usher BE - 718

I listened to Mary Chapin Carpenter's "My Heaven" on these speakers. I thought it sounded great. Very smooth midrange and the bass was suprisingly focused and tight.
