After looking at the user reviews on Amazon, you can also go to CNET and look at editor/user reviews to also give you some ideas:

Not necessarily do the users and editors agree on products. Some reviews will also have a short video on what the editor is reviewing.

This is a good thread, surprised it has died. MartinLogan seem to downplay the MLT-2s (you can't navigate to the product page from the home page, but you can find it via google: http://www.martinlogan.com/products/mlt2), so they're still officially "out there".

After buying MLT-2's on newegg.com for $300+tax, I got the newly discontinued Denon 1612 from Amazon for $200: http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVR-161...1?ie=UTF8&qid=1341500281&sr=8-1&keywords=1612

The 1613 has some internet radio stuff, and a few other bells and whistles, but the 1612 was the latest thing a year ago, so $200 seems like a good deal. A little underpowered compared to the 191x, but I don't have a big room to fill. I think it will work to start with...

I'm totally new to all this, so wanted a decent system without putting in too much money... I can now upgrade everything as/when desired!

What about the new NAD receivers? I've been looking at the T757 and the T777. The ability to drive low impendances attracts me. Add the 7.1 analogue inputs and outputs to the mix and the NADs are worth considering for audio/videophiles.
