Justin,

What's your read on the riots? They seem similarly motivated to that of the LA riots in the 90s (i.e. race tension as a result of police action) - at least based on the limited and highly filtered news feeds I've seen.

Also, three days and still going strong - and spreading (according to what I see). Presumably all is calm in Bristol (other than the mad electronica blasting forth from your ribbons of ecstacy ;))

I just saw a clip from a BBC interview with some man on the street, and the ticker below said "unrest flares up in Bristol".

Don't let them get anywhere near your Duettas Justin!

Seriously though - stay safe!

Hm... I moved out of central Bristol 5 years ago way into the suburbs. Got myself a nice view over the Bristol channel. Pretty safe out here. But when I was a student I lived exactly where the trouble in Bristol recently was. There was a riot there in the mid-80s - I sat and watched it on the news and realised I was pretty much in the middle of it. So I thought I'd go out and have a look. Expecting burnt out cars etc etc I found nothing. That remains curious to this day. Basically, the police had gone on a big drugs raid... which started the riot.

Now I think the media has a lot to answer for in the sense that in no way would the riots have escalated in the way they did without "advertising". When the kids are asked why they are doing it, they haven't got consistent answers. They are, in fact, varied enough to really make you wonder what the hell has happened.

The only way I can really relate to it, is to think how I felt when i was 15-18. That's a difficult time and I personally was a pretty hard core punk. Which makes me think about the Clash's first album. if you read the lyrics, you soon realise that they are as relevant today as they were in 1977. Here's some examples:

Hate & War

Hate and war - the only things we got today

An' if I close my eyes
They will not go away
You have to deal with it
It is the currency

Hate...hate...hate...

The hate of a nation
A million miles from home
An' get war from the junkies
Who don't like my form

I'm gonna stay in the city
Even when the house fall down
I don't dream of a holiday
When hate an' war come around

Hate and war...

I have the will to survive
I cheat if I can't win
If someone locks me out
I kick my back in

An' if I get aggression
I give it to them two time back
Every day it's just the same
With hate an' war on my back

Hate and war - I hate all the English
Hate and war - they're just as bad as wops
Hate and war - I hate all the politeness
Hate and war - I hate all the cops

I wanna walk down any street
Looking like a creep
I don't care if I get beat up
By any Kebab Greek

White Riot

White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own
White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own

Black people gotta lot a problems
But they don't mind throwing a brick
White people go to school
Where they teach you how to be thick

An' everybody's doing
Just what they're told to
An' nobody wants
To go to jail!

White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own
White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own

All the power's in the hands
Of people rich enough to buy it
While we walk the street
Too chicken to even try it

Everybody's doing
Just what they're told to
Nobody wants
To go to jail!

White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own
White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own

Are you taking over
or are you taking orders?
Are you going backwards
Or are you going forwards?

Career Opportunities

The offered me the office, offered me the
shop
They said I'd better take anything they'd got
Do you wanna make tea at the BBC?
Do you wanna be, do you really wanna be a cop?

Career opportunities are the ones that never knock
Every job they offer you is to keep you out the dock
Career opportunity, the ones that never knock

I hate the army an' I hate the R.A.F.
I don't wanna go fighting in the tropical heat
I hate the civil service rules
And I won't open letter bombs for you

Bus driver....ambulance man....ticket inspector

They're gonna have to introduce conscription
They're gonna have to take away my prescription
If they wanna get me making toys
If they wanna get me, well, I got no choice

Careers
Careers
Careers

Ain't never gonna knock

Cheat

I GET VIOLENT WHEN I'M ****ED UP
I GET SILENT WHEN I'M DRUGGED UP
WANT EXCITEMENT, DON'T GET NONE, I GO WILD

I DON'T KNOW WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT
IF YOU PLAY THE GAME YOU GET NOTHING OUT OF IT
FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF TRY BEIN' A GOODY GOODY

YOU BETTER CHEAT CHEAT
NO REASON TO PLAY FAIR
CHEAT CHEAT OR DON'T GET ANYWHERE
CHEAT CHEAT IF YOU CAN'T WIN

NOBODY KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING
IT'S BEYOND YOUR CONTROL, AN' FRIDAY NIGHT'S A RUIN
IF YOU WANNA SURVIVE YOU BETTER LEARN HOW TO LIE

DON'T USE THE RULES
THEY'RE NOT FOR YOU, THEY'RE FOR THE FOOLS
AND YOU'RE A FOOL IF YOU DON'T KNOW THAT
SO USE THE RULE YOU STUPID FOOL

Get the feeling behind that stuff? It's still in the kids of today... well I think so anyway.

You did ask Todd:D:)

In any event, it's very sad, non defensible, and totally counter productive to resolving the underlying issues.

Where are the parents?

GG

Very sad indeed, it only takes a couple of dumba$$'s to ruin everything :(

True. LA culture is different to the UK, though, I'd imagine. But that said, American gangsta wrap is a big influence for young people here.

Whilst a myriad of factors will have caused our recent troubles, I think a salient point that hasn't been discussed much here is the influence of music. I say that knowing how much it influenced me when younger, and how it still does today. Not saying it is a massively important one, but it is a factor IMHO.

Justin,

While in Prague, you should go here and listen to the Zingalis (assuming they have some on the floor)... seems like something you might want to horn-in on.

Nice thinking, Todd. I bought the Nordost speaker cable I use off a Zing user many years ago. I wasn't Zing'ed much when I heard them, though I didn't dislike them.

Some big Zings might be worth a listen. Rest assured, if there is anything in that town worth hearing that can be heard by a stranger, I'll probably let you know about it. Few months off yet though.
