While I was perusing stuff I can't afford but will try to talk my friends into buying on ebay, something occured to me. I've seen much talk about Magneplanar speakers but I've not had the chance to listen to them. But that's not what's bugging me. What bugs me is that I don't know how they work. I have used my incredible skills of logic and reason and deduced that they are not only planar, but also magnetic. And that's about it. :) Are they maybe big ribbon speakers?

It's in their name actually. Maggies are planar magnetics. Embedded in a field from a permanent magnet the voice coil, glued to a mylar sheet, causes the sheet to move. The tweeter is a true ribbon in the higher models and is very sweet, pure and extended.
