New Summit X Review in TAS - Better than any dynamic speaker under $40K

The avguide site has posted the Summit X review to the Golden Ear club members. The guy loved it say the least. The conclusioin is not one bit surprising to electrostat owners.

What videophiles think of high end audio/ kids can't wait to unwrap the game vs cd/lp

Interesting thread here. People sure jump at a colorful and bright tv picture at the store, but not at audio. Kids can't wait to unwrap the video game, but never bought a cd or lp. Here are some reasons why from the horse's mouth: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1259355...

    What are your listening habits?

Does anyone keep stats on what they listen to? I imagine if you listen through an iPod or a digital system, that data is kept for you. Do you jump from song to song, or do you listen to an entire cd/ album? Do you listen to artist "deeply"? I own just about every CD released by the Dead...

    Anyone into Tube Rolling?

I am looking at a couple of headphone amps - Woo 5 and Cary. People on Head-fi.org who own tubed headphone amps seem to value tube rollling highly. Currently my CJ Act2 uses the Russian supertube, so this is not really an option for 2 channel. Some of these tubes, such as rectifiers seem...

Any one hear of a site called What's Best Forum?

The site seems to be moderated by many of the members who were banned from this site. I am not sure if this is due to the summer season or because the site is new, but it does not seem to have a lot of action.

Heard a Quad 57 system and almost s**t in my pants

I was blown away by how good this 50+ year old system sounded. The source was my iPhone--> Wadia transport --> Naim Dac---> Naim 80 wpc Integrated --> Quads. The only downside was a bit of brightness. Not sure if it was the room, the speakers, or the Naim stuff. There is no such brightness...

Re-birth of hifi for the masses?

High end is pretty much dead for the masses. It used to fashionable, but no more. Better sound may be having a comeback, however, thanks to China. 2 recent products come to mind: - Microlab md332 ipod clock radio with Dynaudio engineering and design microlabav.com - $119 on amazon...

Soundproofing a room - decoupling, green glue, etc.

Green glue seems to be the "consensus best" product for sound proofing based on my research. Anyone here put it in? How do you like it? How well does it work for bass frequencies? I imagine it would be hard to get rid of that thump-thump, even if the rest of the frequency range has been...

    SHM CD's

These are cd's made out of a special plastic that claim improved sound. Does anyone own any? Has anyone listened and compared to regular red book cd's? Thanks

Analyzing the reproduced sound. What do you prefer?

What are your priorities in judging reproduced sound? - midrange accuracy - tonal balance - low distortion - frequency range - imaging - soundstaging - dynamics - anything else? For me, it's the midrange, midrange, the midrange, dynamics, tonal balance, and frequency range. The others...

Get more out of the hobby: Great way to learn to understand music

Having been an engineering major, I never had the pleasure to take a class on music. I found a way to make up for it. The courses below are absolute gems. They are taught by some of the best professors around and are created for curious adults. This stuff can be found for free at a local...

NO ONE has heard a BETTER Spire system...reconsidering tube amps for Logans

Have been enjoying Brian's Atma-Sphere MA1 tube amps on my Soundlabs while he is visiting out of town clients. Although they sound great on his more efficient px panels, they don't have enough oomph for my taste to properly drive my A1's. They do produce the most gorgeous and immediate midrange...

The best system I have ever heard

Justin's post on the Apogee rebuild gave me a crazy idea that I could do the same with some old Sound Labs. Well, I picked some very old ones up for pennies on the dollar, had the factory fix them up a bit, and all I can say is WOW! They are not even fully broken in yet, as the mylar needs to...

Focal Event at Quintessence Audio near Chicago on 12/3

Hello All, Quintessence audio, an awesome high end audio store near Chicago, is having a Focal event on 12/3. Anyone interested in hearing some great box speakers should hear the new Focals. They will have the $50K "baby brothers" of the new $190K speakers reviewed in TAS and HiFi+ earlier...

Does one need all 5 channels to enjoy TV and movies?

I have a pair of Vantages that I am trying to sell. However, I was thinking of moving them into my bedroom and hooking them up to my TV instead of using the dinky tv speakers. Is it overkill if I don't go to a 5 channel system? How much more is there sound-wise in a 5 channel vs. 2 channel...

    SPL Meter for the iPhone

In the latest issue of Tone, Jeff talks about the $.99 version. The reviews are quite positive for the app itself from audio professionals. There is also a more robust version for $20 which also gets very positive reviews at the app store by people who know what they are doing...

What influences you to buy audio gear?

Salesmen, spouses, influencers, and shysters all want to getus to change our behavior or to part with our money. Most of the time this happens under the radar and we are not fully aware of it. Most of us audition a piece of gear, are emotionally moved by it, and purchase it. But that’s...

How much Boom Boom do you like in your bass?

I am curious whether folks here know what real bass sounds like. It’s easier with the midrange – we have a reference for a voice. We know what strings sound like. But how well do we know what “correct” bass sounds like? I temporarily moved my system from a dedicated small bedroom to a...

ML Marketing: The Great American Speaker Company

What do you guys think of this marketing message. I noticed it several weeks ago on the website. I think of Mac as the great American electronics company. I never thought of ML as the Great American speaker company. I thought of them as making some great electrostatic speakers. The new...
