Richard Rodgers "Victory at Sea" on RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra CD (1992). This is just some fantastically marshal music, and is just the sort of things to get you going on a lazy morning.
Anjani "Blue Alert" on Columbia/Sony/BMG (2006). Lush recording, with beautiful lyrics that show the hand of her collaborator on this project--Leonard Cohen. Piano is at times subtle and soothing, other times it is almost strident and demanding. Her voice is one of those perfectly angelic, effortless voices with just enough range to make your heart beat a little faster, but not so octave-bending as to be a challenge to believeability. The music is a zen-garden of simplicity on which her lyrics dance a sophisticated tango. If you dig female vocal jazz backed by small combos, get this.
The Flying Neutrinos "I'd Rather Be In New Orleans" on Artists Only Records (1999). Ingrid Lucia, the front-singer for this jazz/swing/blues group, has a voice that is hard to describe. Part Berlin Cabaret, part New Orleans Madame, part Big Band Orchestra, she's smooth as good bourbon, soft and sweet as a mama's Sunday Morning french toast, authoritative, gruff, and sexy as hell--all at the same time. And the combo that backs her provides an equally complex, but somehow straight-forward canvas upon which she paints her distinctinctive sonic portraits. Laid-back, up-beat (but never frenetic like some Swing can be) and even fun and bouncy, this album practically smells like Bourbon Street on a Sunday morning--sweet, magickal, and maybe a little bit sweaty...
