It appears that the Republican Party is so morally bankrupt that the only thing they can close their campaign with is even more lying and very, very negative ads. These "scare" tactics only serve to diminish their positions and their party in general.

I hope they reap the results they deserve.

Absolutely!

Naturally, it's a given that my core beliefs as a conservative/
liberatian will not change. I will remain an opponent to wealth
redistribution, class and race warfare, judicial activism, and other
moribund socialist ideologies and manipulations. I'll never
support Obama's policies, but it's a given I will acknowledge
him as US President should he win.

I suspect everyone's greatest fear is another Dangling Chad
nightmare. I expect both Parties and the FBI will be on full
DefCon5 alert for voter fraud, which should ensure a cleaner-
than-normal election. Then again, it may ensure gobs of
messy unwarranted legal wrangling where no fraud exists.

Nicely put. Couple of thoughts:

1. I hope you (and some others) will be pleasantly surprised by Obama's Presidency (should he be fortunate enough to win on Tuesday) and his policies. I realize the expectations will be huge, tho, whichever candidate wins.

2. I think you meant "DEFCON 1" which is the highest Defense Condition. FWIW, as a member of the former Strategic Air Command (SAC), we used to stay at DEFCON 3, while much of the rest of the DOD normally operated at DEFCON 4. The DEFCONs are (very) briefly outlined below:

DEFCON 5
This is the condition used to designate normal peacetime military readiness. An upgrade in military preparedness is typically made by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and announced by the United States Secretary of Defense.

DEFCON 4
This refers to normal, increased intelligence and the heightening of national security measures.

DEFCON 3
This refers to an increase to force readiness above normal. Radio call signs used by American forces change to currently classified call signs.

DEFCON 2
This refers to a further increase in force readiness just below maximum readiness. The most notable time it was declared was during the Cuban Missile Crisis, although the declaration was limited to Strategic Air Command. It is not certain how many times this level of readiness has been reached.

DEFCON 1
This refers to maximum readiness. It is not certain whether this has ever been used, but it is reserved for imminent or ongoing attack on US military forces or US territory by a foreign military power.

But you know, it hardly seems fair to complain about how much the Obama campaign is spending this year, after the Dems were Bushwhacked in 2000 & 2004 with Bush WAY outspending [some saying he "Bought" the Presidency...] his Democratic rivals. The amounts were just obscene!

With what Obama has spent this year you are kidding right?????

Actually, we may have more in common than we thought...

Like you, I am opposed to "judicial activism." And, certainly opposed to class and race warfare.

Not too sure what is meant by "moribund socialist ideologies and manipulations," but may well be there with you also...

When you say, "wealth redistribution" do you mean you are opposed to all taxes, the progressive nature of the federal and state income taxes (as pushed by President [Theodore] Roosevelt), or something else?

I suspect everyone's greatest fear is another Dangling Chad nightmare. I expect both Parties and the FBI will be on full

Yeah, given the last two Presidential elections, THIS time there seems a strong determination that such shenanigans will not be allowed this time around.

Nope, not "kidding" at all. You might fine it enlightening to go back and take a look at the enormous $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ advantage  Bushy had in both of his presidential campaigns...

BTW, McCain and the various Republican groupies are not all that far behind in spending on this campaign.

My political input, limited to Cut & Paste (for today).

For the finger pointers.

John McCain's Gramm Gamble
http://www.texasobserver.org/article.php?aid=2767
In the early evening of Friday, December 15, 2000, with Christmas break only hours away, the U.S. Senate rushed to pass an essential, 11,000-page government reauthorization bill. In what one legal textbook would later call “a stunning departure from normal legislative practice,” the Senate tacked on a complex, 262-page amendment at the urging of Texas Sen. Phil Gramm.

There was little debate on the floor. According to the Congressional Record, Gramm promised that the amendment—also known as the Commodity Futures Modernization Act—along with other landmark legislation he had authored, would usher in a new era for the U.S. financial services industry.

Great find, Kach. From the article you link to:

Financial wizard Warren Buffett has labeled the risky new investment instruments Gramm unleashed “financial weapons of mass destruction.” They have fed the subprime mortgage crisis like an accelerant. While his distracted peers probably finalized their Christmas gift lists, Gramm created what Wall Street analysts now refer to as the “shadow banking system,” an industry that operates outside any government oversight, but, as witnessed by the Bear Stearns debacle, requiring rescue by taxpayers to avert a national economic catastrophe.

This is, of course, the same Phil Gramm that McCain made Campaign Chief and Chief Economic Advisor. Is it any wonder that Buffett is supporting Obama? C'mon people, wake up and smell the coffee. See this campaign for what it is truly worth! McCain has no clue about economics and is choosing to listen to corporate lobbyists for his plans instead of economists. The same lobbyists that are responsible for getting us into this mess in the first place! Gramm was also knee-deep in the Enron debacle. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that this guy knows nothing about economics and is solely out for greed and corporate welfare.

Obama, on the other hand, has a long list of nobel laureates, former treasury secretaries, former federal reserve members, former SEC chairs, and other noted economists advising and supporting him. Who do you think has the interests of the american people in mind and who do you think is just pandering to corporate interests at the expense of taxpayers? Seems pretty clear to me.

Obama? Why is it that every time I hear that I think of Bam-Bam from the Flintstones? Sorry, not very serious, I know...:D

You will not laugh next time you fill up your car.

Out of the mouth of Babes:

He said NO...of course not, why should I sweetheart?

She replied...well Daddy, I guess it's only other peoples wealth you want to spread around!...

This is supposidly a true story and comes from a Democratic Palm Beach County Commissioner.

I am sorry but that is such BS. He also went to Hawaii not to see his ailing Grandmother but to do a cover up of where he was born. Republican's are really getting desperate.

By all accounts it looks like Obama has this race locked up, it's a shame his grandmother couldn't have held on for another 48 hours to see it happen.

What religion or religious hang-ups would prevent you from voting for the candidate that you find the most appropriate?

A quick word of congratulations from across the Pacific. I have not reviewed the entire thread but the feeling (to me) has been one of the exchange of some pretty divergent opinion without descending into a slanging match.

I have enjoyed particularly the feelings and opinion of the right leaning members of the forum even though it is a world view that I differ from.

Best of luck to you and your country - a strong, respected America remains very important on the world stage.

Just the latest example of wacky, outrageous Sarah, with H. Williams, Jr.:

“You know, I’m usually at ‘Monday Night Football' tonight, but Colorado, this is a lot more important tonight,” Williams, Jr. said. “Join me now in our national—you know, that song that, uh, Mr. Obama’s not real crazy about, we’re singing it right now.”

The crowd cheered, and Williams, Jr. sang the national anthem. The country singer then went into an ode he penned about the Republican presidential ticket, a song called “McCain/Palin Tradition,” which has lyrics referring to Palin as a “good lookin’ dish.”

Palin then stepped up to the microphone and defended Williams Jr.’s right to free speech.

"We want to take a minute here to thank Hank Williams Jr.,” Palin said. “Over the past couple of months he has traveled with us. He and his most beautiful family stops all along the way this campaign trail. Now this is the last rally that we get to do together, and he's been just a great inspiration—never one to hide his opinion or be afraid to share it. Hey, he exercises those First Amendment rights. We love him! Yes. So we want to thank Hank and we are going to see him tomorrow night on the other side of victory, my friend."

Though Paln defended Williams Jr.'s rights, she said nothing to the crowd to disabuse the crooner’s notion that Obama isn’t fond of the national anthem.

Talk about taking the low road, with the Bush/Cheney/Rove playbook, "anyone who disagrees with us is unpatriotic" idiom. Can ANYONE someone this ridiculous as VP...or worse, President?:eek::eek: I sure can't!

She is just simply pathetic.

Hey all,

just want to take a minute to remind you all to get out there and vote today - no matter who you're candidate is, it's very important that you voice your opinion at the polls.

Thanks for this thread.. It has been a good read and the fact that it's remained civil is not only a testament to the intelligence of all of you who participated, but also shows how passionate we all are about what happens to our country.

I believe that whoever wins, the USA will be better off because Bush and Cheney will be gone.

GO USA!

Good post, and for those of you thinking about voting after work, DON'T LISTEN TO THE EXIT POLLS to make the decision to vote or not.

"Mr. Kerry, I would like to be the first..."
