Looking for good recording of Rossini's William Tell Overture

Try the Telarc : Willaim Tell & Other Favorite Overtures" with Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. Its Telarc CD-80116

    Cable lengths

I can appreciate your choice in cable, but 'conventioanl' wisdom indicates a short IC with long speaker cables, the reasoning? The signal over the IC is very small and susceptible to interference much more so than the stronger signal from the amp to the speakers. I know that doesn't really...

    Quests failure ?

Bought my Quests new circa 1997, and they sound like the day I got them. Not sure, but maybe I'm missing something. A lot of you guys have replaced the panels.

    The musicophile v. the audiophile

Well I am uncategorically, a musicophile. Sure I've spent years and thousands of dollars to get my system together, and I'll likely spend more nbefore I'm through but...... I've got the electronics and the Quests because of the life like music reproduction. I started college as a music major...

    New panels for Quests

Mine are getting a bit long in the tooth also. Could you ball park the cost of the new panels? And did you have anyother symptoms beisde a high frequency degradation? Thanks, Joe

    DAC's?

Do NOT get the 75 Ohm coax. Get an XLR cable, forget toslink, fiber, etc. Once you get experience with a QUALITY DAC, you will never go back to a 'cd player' any more than one would go back to a 'receiver' after listening to a pre-amp / amp combination

    Sonic Frontiers Line 1?

Do a search on Stereophile on line. I know I read a review in hardcopy a few years ago. But.... you know about their reviews. Anyone ever read a bad review? Sorry, I am NOT hijacking this thread. Check out the web site for the review.

    Balance, single ended? Help

Yea, My Levinson works the same way. Try it, if it diesn't work, I'm pretty sure it won't hurt the the pre-amp

Flowers and Bunnies (and my experience with Logans)

Well I just finished reading this thread, and thats 5 minutes of my life I won't be getting back. While I have always subscribed to putting more $$ into the speakers than any other individual component, I think the leap to the MLs for the existing source and processing components is just too...

What is the first piece of music you ever owned?

My first LP: Led Zepplin II First CD: Dark Side of the Moon First Mobile Sound Fidelity Half Speed Master Recoding (LP): Dark Side of the Moon Most often purchased LP: Dark Side of the Moon: 5 (Don't ask how I wore out the album covers too ;-)

    What is your Speaker/Amplifier combination?

Running a pair of Quests pushed by a Classe' CA150. Looking to go to a Mark Levinson 334. Don't think copious amounts of power are really necessary. A good 150 - 200 watts will suffice.

What are your thoughts on this Levinson 333 amp?

I heard that amp with the Quest spkrs at Ovation near Willow Grove Pa., a few ( too many) years ago. I thought that the 333's grabbed the panels and drove them! My thoughts, as I recall them at the time, were of precision and seemless ntegration between the panels and the cones. The sound...

    spikes and wood floor

I have about the same issue. Under my Quests I put a Symposium platform. Works like a champ and no spike marks. Try it at: www.symposiumusa.com

Classe Audio versus Parasound Halo amps

I've been thinking about getting a new amp... but, if you're going to dump your CA-150, I could bi-amp my Quests. Hmmm...... Drop me a line if interested. Joe

Pink Floyd / Dark Side of the Moon

I believe I went through 3 albums, one 8 track, have the mobile sound fidelity album and the MSF CD. Its the standard I use for every component purchase and the first I grab to determine if the latest tweak is a keeper or returned to sender! I have all too many CD's at this point, covering...

    400 watts to a 200 watt speaker?

I won't challenge your experience and would submit that a higher power amp, with inherent more headroom will provide a better sound at a moderate SPL than a lower power amp at the same SPL. When all is said and done, what sounds best to your ears is always the best, irrespective of power or...

    400 watts to a 200 watt speaker?

The probelm as stated in numerous replies above is insufficient power causing the amp to be driven to overload. There is however the question of the quality of the signal that is being amplified. as alluded to earlier, unplugging an interconnect with the amp powered up is, sorry, but careless...

The biggest change to reduce brightness: Tube preamp or cd player

You could try getting a California Audio Labs (CAL) transport with their tubed DAC. It runs with a tube on each output stage. When I had that gear, it provided a great sense of warmth by smoothing the digital output into a more analog signal. I suspect a tube pre-amp would do the same...

    Muddy Waters - Folk Singer

I agree, its a great album. I have the Original Master Recording Ultradisc II version not the redbook cd. The resolution is great, the sound stage is perfect. Feels like you're in the studio with him.
