Why so many used ML electrostats listed for sale and less than a year old?

FWIW, I think the Prodigy is going to be hard to beat, and I'd love to hear what you think. I play speakers for visitors in my office. It's a far from optimal listening environment that well demonstrates immunity to room particulars. Just PM me for my phone number and we can set up a time.

Well, there is such thing as a monopole electrostatic, for those who wish to minimize the influence of the room.

BACCH4mac, you really should try it

BACCH has a mode that can simulate 5.1, 7.1, etc.. using just two speakers. IMO, this is interesting, but not as good as the pure BACCH mode, because the virtual sound sources are more or less localized to set speaker locations. The pure BACCH mode provides seamless, three dimensional sound all...

BACCH4mac, you really should try it

FWIW, the particular pair of JansZen Valentina that were being used in the latest AXPONA demo had the SE option, which provides omni dispersion at the press of a button on the remote. SE stands for Stereo Everywhere, and when in SE mode, they sound about the same all over the room and also...

    Rocky Mountain Audio Fest 2009

JansZens and dipoles Hi, Twitch54. Please allow me to elaborate ad nauseam on my original answer to your question. Essentially, all raw drivers are dipoles, not just ESLs, in that they all have a front and rear to their vibrating surfaces, and thus radiate in both directions out of phase...

Heard a KILLER new Electrostat - JansZen!!!!!!!!!

Efficiency. Clearly, the basic benefit of increased driver efficiency is an increase in SPL for a given electrical power level. Louder can be better in an absolute sense, and high efficiency can let one use a low power amp that has particular merits other than high power. Measures taken to...

What Do You Strive For In A System - Accuracy Or Euphony?

Thanks. Anyway, I was thinking less of competitive distraction than just a simple tendency to analyze what one knows something about in order to understand the work product, whether it is a motorcycle or a piece of music. It's the difference in the types of impressions, feelings and imagery...

What Do You Strive For In A System - Accuracy Or Euphony?

I'm an engineer, musician, composer, and music lover (varying degrees of skill and talent). In creating speakers from this POV, I have struggled a bit with the accuracy/euphony issue. Here is what I think it boils down to: One stands the best chance of creating one's preferred flavor of euphony...

Heard a KILLER new Electrostat - JansZen!!!!!!!!!

First, you have to decide which way to increase the size, which matters somewhat, even for so small a change: taller, wider, both? After deciding and proceeding, each listener would then have a personal opinion about whether the result is an improvement. The primary result would be an almost...

Monopole, dipole, bipole radiation patterns -- a must-see web page Thanks. Guts are us. I stumbled on a cool page just now about radiation patterns, and while oriented toward HT, I think everyone will find it a nicely done and informative overview: http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=66471

Heard a KILLER new Electrostat - JansZen!!!!!!!!!

In an ESL, open air provides most of the mass load, but very little damping, i.e., none of what might be called resistive force. A mass load is reactive, rather than resistive, in the sense of tending to stay at rest or in motion. The other reactive element is the elasticity of the membrane...

Heard a KILLER new Electrostat - JansZen!!!!!!!!!

It is a rotary switch, connected to some parts. In one position, the parts that create the contours are bypassed out of the circuit, and in the other positions, any of four configurations can be selected. The entire thing is passive. I do not see what could be taboo about that...

Heard a KILLER new Electrostat - JansZen!!!!!!!!!

Three main reasons: It represents a more line-like source for the bass, which creates a somewhat cylindrical field that better matches the ESL line's cylinder, increasing spectral uniformity It creates a situation where the phase at all frequencies is optimally aligned for positions along...
