    Jim Winey - RIP

I would not compare a consumer rack system to a a hi-end component system. That said, within the category of consumer rack systems, advancements in tech have made it possible to manufacture systems that sound better than those sold 30 or 50 years ago. But, the best rack system with the newest...

    Jim Winey - RIP

I was fortunate to be able to make such a comparison at the Stereophile show in SF (I think it was 1989). Amanda McBroom performed on stage and the speakers used were none other than ML Sequels which I have used since I purchased them new in 1987. I frequently used her "Dreaming" album for...

Phono pre-amp decision: tubes vs SS

You might be able to find an old Convergegent Audio Technonolgy Signature or Reference model with phono stage for under $2K

    Which One???

I have read these questions for years and all I can say is that I think people stress way too much about the HF impedance dips. I have original Sequels that I bought new a few months after they first were on the market. I am on my 3rd set of panels and second set of woofers since 1987. At...

What piece of music do you use to gauge your system by?

I have a pair of Sequels which I bought new a few months after they were released. I think I paid $1950. :) 3rd re-panel now. Kimber TC8 speaker wires. Mirage BPS 400 sub with LFX-1 crossover. I use it judiciously just enough to support the lowest bass frequencies. CAT Signature MkIII (with...

What piece of music do you use to gauge your system by?

I use several pieces each for differenet aspects. Enya - "Miss Clare Remembers" from Watermark has a good recording of a piano solo. It gives me a handle of how well a change I have made is true to the notes being played. Amanda McBroom - "The Rose" from Dreaming gives me a sense of how well...

    Sound Diffusor

My guess is that those would be more absorbers than diffusers. The best results I have ever achieved on he cheap were with adjustable window blinds. They seemed to reduce reflections to increase focus of the soundstage without absorbing too much life out of the sound.

    fuses!

I know it sounds improbable that a fuse might change the sound of a piece of audio gear but I can say it happens "sometimes". About 10 years ago I decided to try some of the affordable fuses out there at the time. I paid $69 each for two Audio Magic nano liquid fuses for my ARC Classic 60 amp...

How to know what kind of circuit you might need to power your equipment?

Output power of an amp is not the same as it's current draw on the mains line. I better way to estimate mains load is to look at the mains fuses used in your equipment. If the mains fuse is say 3A, the steady draw would not be more than about 360W at 120V regardless of the amp's rated output...

How to know what kind of circuit you might need to power your equipment?

The BPT Signature 3.5 Plus sounds like an improved version of the original Tice Power Block.

    New ReQuest Panels

About an hour to swap the panels with a helper. It won't take as long to replace the panels as it will to get the speaker placement spot on.

    The ohms Trick

Aren't we overlooking the fact that high frequencies require less power than low frequencies. So, maybe a dip to 2 ohms at say 20K Hz really won't require more power as say 200 Hz at 8 ohms?

    AudioResearch i50 Integrated with ESL-X?

I have had Sequels since bought them in 1987 (3 panel changes since then and one woofer change). I used a Tandberg 200 watt solid state amp after trying Carver, Bryson, and Bolder amps until I bought an ARC Classic 60 in 1995. I have used ARC amps with my Sequels for many years. My first was...

    Speaker Cable Questions

Click on "Watch on YouTube" in the video.. Then, you will see parts 2-4 in the sidebar to the right of the video. The moral of the story is that if you have to do something with a too long wire, don't coil it in circular loops; coil in in a figure pattern.
