If I have a single cable that has 4 solid core strands - 2 red and 2 black, is there any reason why I couldn't combine all 4 strands into a single connection? TIA

That will work and effectively double the gauge of a single wire if you twist two wires together.

Never tried twisting 4 together.

If we start with 16AWG wire and connect two strands together we have a 13AWG wire.
If we start with 16AWG wire and connect four strands together we have a 10AWG wire.
But, if the hot and neutral conductor are not in the same cable, the cables will have high self-induction and treble frequency response may suffer.
