I've been playing around with cabling and have found a synergistic mixture. I was running old AQ Midnights for the woofer and Tara Labs Quantum II for the stat panel on my Sequel II's, with Transparent RCA's. I upgraded it all to Signal Cable Ultra biwire and Analogue 2 RCA's. This gave a very nice improvement. Ah, but upgraditis set in
I tried Nordost Baldurs next. I loved the top end air, the much improved attack and decay, but it unbalanced the sound, as I was paying attention to the treble instead of the music. I think it highlighted the relative lack of bass of the Sequel II's. So now with my Summits, the Baldur's sound much better! Interesting. I had bought 1 set of Frey's, and they definitely improved the sound with the Sequel II's, much better bass/treble balance while still retaining the top end air. Less of a difference between the Baldur and Frey with the Summits though.
So now, I've got 2 Frey's, one from the CDP to preamp, the second from pre to power amp. I like it! Lots of top end air, while still well balanced sound stage. I tried the Baldur from CDP to pre with the Frey next, but found using 2 Frey's more cohesive. I've also got Nordost Shiva's to the CDP and preamp. I've got a 3rd on the way, for my phono stage. I'm still running the Signal Cable Ultra speaker cable, and Signal Cable Analogue 2 RCA for the phono stage. I tried the Baldur with the phono stage, but too bright and a bit grainy as the phono stage is still breaking in. I might try again in a month or two as I don't use my TT all that much. I'd like to get all Nordost cabling for any synergistic effects, but Nordost speaker cable is quite expensive, and rarely come up used I find. I'm sure I'll stick with my current set up for a while.
It's been very interesting experimenting with cabling. I don't like bright sounding stereo's, yet I've ended up with the silver coated copper cable as my favorite. I'm thinking of trying Signal Cable Silver Resolution power cables for each speaker, the power amp, and my Furman next. Man, once I'm done with cabling, then what? Oh yeah. Try tubed power amps, and upgrade the CDP. Hmm, a new TT would be nice to go with my fabulous phono stage. Oh yeah, next I'll.........ARRRGH! It's a disease!
