when ANY thread turns to useless banter..... that's what the 'axe is for' !!!
First of all, let's be clear about what this was and what it wasn't. It was not "useless banter", with all due respect, Dave. It was a passionate discussion among members about a topic to which many of us relate, the definition of an audiophile. It got sidetracked into another issue, which also touches a chord with many members, and that was about the differences between live vs. recorded music and the quality of the sound relative to each. (If that topic is not relevant to Martin Logan speaker owners, then I don't know what is). Unfortunately, the thread deteriorated into a heated exchange between myself and another forum member, and the final forum post by the other member contained personal insults and expletives directed specifically toward me that, according to the clear standards of this forum, have no place here.
Let me state for the record that I fully support Tom in his decision to nuke the thread, and I would fully support him had he decided to take any other action, including if he decided to ban me for being a participant in such a heated exchange. I have complete respect for what Tom has done with this forum and for how much time, effort and energy he puts toward keeping it going. I will not question his decisions as relates to the management of this forum.
Having said that, I do agree with Beakman that I would have preferred that he post an explanation immediately so that everyone knew the reason the thread disappeared. Generally, that is exactly what he does. But this forum is not Tom's full-time job and everyone needs to understand that this is a labor of love for him and sometimes he has to make decisions about how much time to put into dealing with it. Playing referee to inane squabbles among members probably ranks pretty low on his list. So I fully understand him just nuking the thread and moving on. If he had more time to deal with it, perhaps he would have handled it differently. Perhaps not.
Regardless, I think the time has come to put it behind us and get back to the purpose of the forum, which is friendly discussion about Martin Logan speakers and all things audio. For my part, I sincerely apologize to all forum members for my actions that contributed to this situation.
