Awhile back I purchased a Cary slp98p and it improved everything in my system. It replaced a sunfire tgiii. In the future I am considering a different front end. I have a denon 5900 universal which I use for 2 channel. I have seen good reviews on several players including the ayre 5xe universal, primaluna eight w board upgrade, Cary 306, esoteric sa-60. Anyone hear any of these? I know some of the folks here have the 306. My denon is no slouch but am wondering what I can do to squeeze the last bit of juice out of my system. Any other suggestions welcome as well.

are you actually playing all three formats? Dvd-a, SACD and CD? If you use all formats equally, I've had excellent luck with the Ayre.

Yes I play mostly sacd and cd. How does the ayre get past the menus for DVD-a? That is the biggest pain. If I didn't need video to figure out what layer I was playing on the DVD-a I would play mine more.

Any chance you would listen to SACD and DVD audio in 5.1 multi-channel........I am just asking?:D

If so there are some really good Universal Disc Players out there that for the money play way above their heads, oh and they play 2 channel really well also......that's if you are in to that sort of thing.:D

If so, I can post a couple suggestions, if not, nevermind.

When I first bought my denon -I was thinking multi-channel - but, after awhile - I realized that I was constantly looking over my shoulder which distracted my overall enjoyment - or that the center image was created by another speaker - not the imaging of the L/R channel.... I like the 'psycho-acoustic' you get from a 2 channel rig. The fact that the soundstage is expansive - yet there are no speakers there to support that is where I get my kicks.. I also have a hard time having these state of the art speakers (in your case CLX's!!) and not pushing the full signal thru them. I think I am just old school!! But- keep up the mission - I saw some posts you had out there and I started thinking....wonder if I should get some scripts or aeons for the rears? :)

timm,

I love my Cary 306 but I know the Ayre has received some glowing reviews and has quite the following. The upsampling feature on the Cary, in the analogue and digital domain, really allows one to fine tune the overall sound. I, for one, would not buy a CDP without some upsampling options.

Best option, if you can arrange, is a no cost / in home audition.

The Cary plays rebook, SACD, but not dvd-a. It also has an digital in that allows one to use the DAC for other devices.

Good luck.

Okay, well that was an honest answer, I hear ya.

Since some of my posts have at least caused you ponder multichannel then hear/here are a couple of really good Universal Disc Players that you can use for SACD, DVD Audio, SHM, HRCD, Redbook, DVD Video and just about every format that I have found out there.

McCormack UDP-1, check reviews on it if you want, but it costs from 3K new on A'gon to as little as 1K used. Every review states it plays with players in the 6 to 10K range.

Also the Simaudio Moon Orbiter, whenever one comes on A'gon they usually don't last a day. They retailed for 8 or 9K new and go for about 4K used. This machine also has a reputation for playing with the big boys. I have both and can say their prowess is not over-rated.

Either machine hooked up with a PS Audio Digital Link III, is a killer combination for 2 channel and oh yeah there is that button that lets you access the 5.1 surround layer whenever you might want a taste.

The one truth about Multi-channel Universal Disc players is that you can always play Two-Channel when you want. Unfortunately with two channel Universal Disc Players you can't play Multi-channel when the moment is right.......or maybe that's Cialis.:D

I know with CLXs in surround mode, if you listen for more than 4 hours in a row you should see a doctor.......you know that may be Cialis too.:D

The Ayre c5 is a giant killer. Mine was recently upgraded to MP - the new apodizing filter. That $250 upgrade alone made a bigger difference than any cable I have heard, including ones that cost more than $10K such as Transparent OPUS.

If you don't own any DVD-A's, you can find ones on the used market. It will help you discover new music...
