Great selections Brian ! I just returned from a tasting at the shop tonite, La flor Dominicana, smoked a 'chisel', that as you know is one serious smoke and along with 'two fingers' of Balvenie 'Double wood' it tasted even better !

Oooh, that sounds gooood.

After grilling a steak on a quite mid-50s evening, I want to
build a fire in the backyard pit then pour a neat Laphroig
and burn a Chisel until the fire dies. Problem is, it won't
stop raining and the temp won't crawl out of the 40s.

The Vinotemp is temporarily sitting on my kitchen table.
My plan was to buy an inexpensive table, about 18" x 18"
x 36" tall, to bring my fridgeador up to a convenient height.
I'd also like a drawer for my accesories and perhaps some
storage below.

So I've been cruising local stores looking for something
that works. Nothing in the furniture stores is below $700.
Even the Walmart/Target "kits" start around $200. Yikes!

I am astounded that it's actually cheaper for me to buy a
second Vinotemp thermoelectric wine cooler and stack them
on top of each other. The bottom unit could be long-term
unopened box storage while the top unit could be pimped
out in spanish cedar for singles and open boxes. You'd
essentially have a climate-controlled, dual-zone, cabinet
humidor for $400.

Hmm...

HSV, I'm sure you make it to BHam from time to time. My favorite cigar store ever is on US31 between I-65 and I-459. It's definitely worth a stop if you're in town. http://www.magiccitycigar.com/ Their humidor is bigger than most stores I've been in, and the smoking room is even bigger (and nicely appointed).

I always enjoyed a good cigar, especially when I had to drive cross country. I bought the cheap ones did not know any better but to me they were great,"Dutch Masters", the fat ones, lol anyways about ten years ago I had (Not sure of spelling )but had Lazik-surgery. And now I have 15/20 vision and my good eye is my shooting eye, and I never enjoy seeing better, especially when out in the field on a rainy day. But the only side affect is I cannot smoke any more cigars because the smoke bothers my eyes too much. I can live with it!;) So when I smell someone else smoking I enjoy the scent.

I've been there years ago. It is a nice store, but their prices
were a bit high. I used to stop there to get Romeo&Julieta
Vintage VI before I lost interest in that brand.

I'm a bit spoiled on my local shop, "The Humidor". They've
been in business since the 1960s. Honest and very
knowledgeable guys with a few museum kermudgeons
hanging around for posterity. Fair to good selection,
depending on the season. Stogies are always in good shape.
Prices are very good across the board with no gouging for
premium sticks.

I tried a La Aroma de Cuba (petite corona size) there last
Saturday while listening to a recently retired US Marine
3-Star General (!) and several other retired military Cols
and Caps chat about foreign affairs and politics. It was
a real treat being a fly on the wall for that conversation.
The cigar was pretty darn good too.

Don't know if you get towards Montgomery often, but I
recently discovered an extremely nice store in Prattville.
It's called "The Prattville Cigar Co." and is located in a strip
mall just off I-65. Looks like nothing from the street, but
their humidor is gigantic. It's easily the biggest I've ever
visited in person, and that includes an overpriced "cigar
boutique" in Destin. They have an awesome selection of
almost every brand, a pleasant smoking lounge, and
usually have hard to find sticks like Ashton ESG, VSG,
Padron Anniversay, etc. Unfortunately, their prices for
high-ends smokes are a bit high similar to the B'Ham
store you mentioned. Nice people though.

I haven't a clue about the high-end prices, but the region of smokes that I can buy (a $6.50 cigar is a real treat for me) I haven't been able to beat their prices. They also had the best selection of $2-3 smokes ever.

Isn't all of Prattville a strip mall off I-65? :)

The Vinotemp is almost full now, so I'm now preparing a
120 quart Igloo cooler for the rest of my stash-to-be. Once
the cooler is full, I should be set for about 10 years.

I tried an Oliva Serie V maduro at the Prattville Cigar store.
What an awesome smoke! Before this, I had never had a
stick with such a strong licorice note. Very interesting and
fun. I bought the last box after I learned that the maduro
version is rather hard to find and I'll probably never have
another chance.

I also tried an Oliva Serie G the next day. It was pleasant,
but not in the same league as the V. The draw was also a
bit lighter than I prefer.

It was rainy today, so I hung out at my local store and
tried the La Flor Double Ligero "Lancero". It was butter
smooth and not at all strong like I feared. These are freaky
long and skinny sticks, and don't exactly fly off the shelves
for that reason. This box had been in the store's humidor
for well over a year, so I expect that helped a lot with the
smoothness. I've never really understood what reviewers
meant by a "leather" taste in a cigar, but it was really
obvious within the first inch of burn on this one. This also
had a complimentary salt flavor with a tinge of what I now
recognized as licorice in the background now and then.
By far the best cigar I've had this year (ahem).

Brian, the entire La Flor Dominicana is quite good, IMO.

Regarding your "Cigar Locker(s)".....a ten year supply ? how many cigars is that ? Myself I can't imagine a locker big enough to store ten years worth of cigars for me (6-8000 cigars)

You are definitely a heavy-weight. I'm a light middle-weight
at best. I enjoy a full-bodied smoke once in a while, but I
can't herf down two or three in a day.

Until now, I've never stockpiled more than 30 or 40 cigars
in my desktop humidor. It takes well over a year for me to
cycle through those sticks, so I only smoke about 20 to 25
cigars a year. I may have one cigar a week in Spring and
Fall, then go months without one because the weather is
not suitable for a 1-hour smoke.

Except at the cigar lounge, I only smoke outdoors in nice
weather. I especially like a smoke on the beach in Destin.
My next favorite smoke is while I'm fishing with my Dad
in the Spring.

As a matter of fact last nites Eagles victory was a "Tri-Fecta"...started out with Don Papien '601' , followed by a Rocky Patel 'Decade' and finished with my current favorite..... Camacho 11/18 !

Of course in between a couple bowls of chilli along several beverages of choice were consumed !

I've enjoyed the odd cigar, but that's just a death wish!

yeah I know, nasty habit I acquired from my Uncle and Grandfather...my Grandfather only lived to be 93, Uncle made it 102. I suppose I'll change all of that.

I started back in the summer of '76, Dutch Master, Cameroon 'Whiffs', I've been smoking handmade, longfiller cigars since '82.

A death wish is one thing Dave, far be it for us to try and talk you out of it.

But for Gods sake think of all the audio upgrade money your spending on cigars. What are you thinking?:D

hmmmm, well I guess I could look at it like man the money I spent on those Spire's....think of all the cigars I could have bought !!......you're right Wayne, that is money that could be spent on more vinyl / Cd's !!

Although I'm still playing with the idea of a homemade
Infinite Baffle sub in the ceiling someday, I've made all
the audio upgrades I want. All system improvements from
here on will be custom room treatments, mostly as an
excuse to play in the woodshop. While I smoke a cigar. ;)

Hey guys....how about bundles ??? Everybody has some "Bargin sticks" to brag about !

For me it's Consuegra and Perdomo Fresco's, my favorite bundle cigars for cutting the grass or playing golf.

A bundle of twenty five 7 1/4 x 54's runs around $35.00

I plan to buy a hundred or so Rocky Patel "Seconds" from
Cigars International. That will probably be my last large
purchase for the new stogie hoard.

A large shipment of premium sticks is suppose to arrive
tomorrow. I'm nearing the 1,000 cigar mark , but I've
not taken an exact inventory yet. I'll post a photo of
the whole stash once everything arrives.

The new SCHIP tax goes into affect April 1st. The tax is
capped at 0.40 per cigar for now, but I've heard we can
expect prices to go up closer to .50 per cigar. Cigar
manufacturers absorbed the last tax hike so that prices
remained the same. The prior tax may be incorporated
into the upcoming price increases.

Buy 'em while they're cheap. Smoke 'em if you got 'em.
