Arc Sp16/17

Does anyone have any experience with the Audio Research SP16 or 17 preamp? I went to my ARC dealer the other day and listened to the SP17. He also said he may be able to get the SP16. I listened to it on a pair of Vandersteens and it sounded great. What do you think of this piece and is there anything else out there I should check out that's similar in price?

The 17 uses more modern technology that is descended from the Ref 3. The 16 is an older model and it probably won't sound as good. The tube compliment is also different. As an owner of a Ref 3, I think your choice is obvious.
