    ML & digital amps.

I think the problem is that the magazines are listening to the mass-market receivers using your typical 8 ohm speakers. Or, if they are using lower-impedance speakers, they're using ones with a fairly constant load. Based on my (limited) understanding of the MartinLogans, not only are they a...

Moving from Stax Omega II to ML

Bahamaman, I'm in a similar boat as you! I've spent the past two months weighing the various options in my mind and every time I think I've decided on a setup, I find myself reconsidering the choice the next day. :( I think that I'm in a little better situation than you, though, since I...

    marantz monoblock

LOL! When I first read the original post, I thought that the thread was discussing these ==>http://us.marantz.com/Products/1954.asp And I was thinking to myself, "Geez, isn't it a little extreme to power $3K speakers with $16K of amplification?" :p

Getting the Clarities--but what do I power them with?

I've become intrigued by the idea of setting up a 2 channel system now and then upgrading to 5.1 as funds allow, so I've been looking for pre-amps/integrated amps with home theater pass through and I think that I've found one that fits my needs--the Cambridge Audio 840A. From what I've seen...

Getting the Clarities--but what do I power them with?

Interesting. Is it easy to determine if a pre amp does this? Do you know of any models for under $1,000? That works for normal DVDs but Blu-Ray and HD-DVD can only digitally output the new hi-rez audio formats over HDMI :( , which is kind of why I want a receiver with HDMI.

Getting the Clarities--but what do I power them with?

Thanks for the responses, everyone! As always, lots of good advice. I was originally considering getting a Parasound Halo P3 preamp with the A23 amplifier, but I know that I'm going to want to go 5.1 some time in the future (probably a year from now, or so), and it seemed like kind of a waste...

Getting the Clarities--but what do I power them with?

After a lot of thought, I’ve finally decided to get the MartinLogan Clarity speakers. While I feel that the Vantages are certainly worth twice the price, I really need to upgrade some of my electronics, and I won’t be able to do that if I spring for the Vantages. Also, if I get the Clarities...

    To Vantage Or Not...

I haven't heard the Ascents, so I can't really comment on how much of an upgrade it would be for you. However, were you planning on selling or keeping the Ascents? Ascents look like they go for about $2,000-$2,500 on Audiogon--if you were to sell them and add that money to the amount you were...

    CD/SACD players

Brad, you might want to consider auditioning the Sony SCD-XA9000ES, too. I don't think that the build quality of the XA9000ES is as nice as the SCD-1, but it does have a few advantages: (1) It can do multi-channel (2) It can output SACD digitally over iLink (3) It's a few years newer, so the...

Buy The Very Best Source You Can Afford

Please stop! :stop: All this talk about the benefits of chunky transports is making me fantasize about getting a Sony SCD-1! :D I've seen a lot of CD players that cost a lot more money, but I think that the SCD-1 is the most aesthetically pleasing to my eyes. And it's supposed to sound...

Buy The Very Best Source You Can Afford

True, but don't you need a good receiver/pre-pro to get the best out of vinyl, too? Can you explain to me why that would be? About the only thing that I can think of is that a more expensive transport might have less jitter--but I'm not convinced that jitter is even something my ears are...

Buy The Very Best Source You Can Afford

Actually, it does-->http://www.oppodigital.com/dv970hd/dv970hd_support.html Do you connect your player using the analog or digital outs? I would have no doubt that, using the analog outs on both players, the Sony would sound significantly better than the Oppo, since the Sony should have much...

Buy The Very Best Source You Can Afford

A VPI machine, huh? Jeez, I looked at their website and the cheapest one appears to be $500!! That seems like a hell of a lot to pay for something that just cleans your media. Which brings me to another point--it appears to me that, for $150, I can get an Oppo universal player, run a HDMI...

Buy The Very Best Source You Can Afford

Um, yes, actually. Because that crackle is going to occur at the same spot every time your hear that record--I find that utterly maddening. Maybe it's because I'm an amateur musician who has spent a lot of time engineering my own songs, but any sort of sonic imperfection like background...

Buy The Very Best Source You Can Afford

Okay, I know that the whole "vinyl vs CD" thing is one of the most hotly contested debates in audiophilia, and I probably shouldn't be saying anything that will set off another epic debate but, oh well! :p Really, I don't think that I would ever take vinyl over CD. Here's why: while I was...

Buy The Very Best Source You Can Afford

While I agree that the source is important (definitely more important than cables, IMO), buying a more expensive source does not necessarily mean that you're getting exponentially better sound. Check, for example, Stereophile's review of the Sony SCD-XA9000ES SACD player. The reviewer found...

MartinLogan won't be at CES this year?

I was looking at the list of companies at this year's CES, and I noticed that MartinLogan wasn't among them (https://myces2007.bdmetrics.com/Portal/browseresults.aspx?blet=M,N). Is that normal? I thought that they usually attended? Maybe they just don't have any new products to announce?

Bang & Olufsen Amp in our MLs??

    The Vantage's use a B&O amp? Ah, so that's why they're $1,300 more than the Vistas... ;)

Just heard MartinLogans for the first time...

*sigh* This is kind of frustrating. The Clarities were already costing as much as I originally budgeted for all five speakers in my home theater. I don't mind spending more money to get something that I really like, but this issue is dampening by enthusiasm a bit. I know that no speaker is...

Just heard MartinLogans for the first time...

Ah, I just picked up the issue of TAS with the Vista review and now I know what you mean. Maybe I'll try re-auditioning the Vista and Vantage in a 2.1 setup and see what differences I hear. Still, couldn't this lack of midbass just be fixed with a little EQ on the receiver (it sounds like the...
