Hi

I have read and heard from dealers, that the combination of Martin Logan with McIntosh MC 275 gives a sound that is really magic:

Can somebody confirm that?

Do you need two MC 275 for the CLS II?

Which preamp do you recommend: C 2300 AC or the smaller C 220?

I want to restore my CLS II, that i use with a Neukomm Audio system (Swissmade).

Many thanks for your advice / experience!

Greetings Gerrit

Gerrit,

As Steve said, try to audition, preferably in your own system, before buying.

I've read several reviews on this amp with mixed results. No idea on the preamp.

If restoration includes new panels, check on current pricing before proceeding further.

Good luck.

There once was a member here who thought that amp combo was divine. As for the replacement panels you better be ready to spend roughly $3k for them and thats with no KY !

I enjoyed the limeric-like bookends to this post ;)

I have the CLS1 version with new panels (and also a spare set boxed that I ordered prior to the announcement the ML would support the speaker "forever") using a McIntosh 2200 Tube Preamp and MC275IV with Gold Lion Reissue tubes and Telefunken signal tubes in both the preamp and amp. To my ears it is a very good combination for Jazz, small Classical quartets, and Vocals, not so much so for Rock or Dynamic music reproduction. I was extremely happy with this combination until I purchased two MC1.2K's and added it to the system. The 1.2K's have a larger soundstage with detail and dynamic headroom the MC275 cannot compete with. I think it is a more accurate representation of the music.
I was going to sell my MC275 but just can't part with the liquid smoothness that I like to hear on occasion when listening to Jazz, or Jazz vocals... super lush and smooth.
If I remember correctly the CLSII is easier to drive than my I's so there may be some difference and running two amps may help when you crank it up but the sound signature of the 275 won't change much.
When listening to well recorded rock the 1.2K's just kill the 275... the meters on the 1.2k's will show over 250 watts a side on peaks way beyond what the 275 can put out and is just way more dynamic...
That is just my opinion. I agree with others that you will need to audition them in your system and home environment to be sure.
Previously I powered the CLS's with a Krell KBL and KSA-250 which was a horrible match for my ears...

Our man Ron on the forum may have some insight for you. He has clx's though but he is running everything with the McIntosh equipment and may have previously owned a similar setup before he won the lottery
