If I see a price and then OBO next to it I start at 33% less than asking. In my head I know what I'm willing to pay for the item. If they say no I go up slowly till I hit my max and then I walk away. I have had transactions that took 20+ e-mails in a matter of an hour.
I usually list the stuff I am trying to sell at about $50 to $100 above what I want, and indicate OBO. So, if I listed something at $1000, and was offered 33% less, I would ignore it as a lowball, thinking that the buyer was not serious.

Two different approaches.

Curious - this is the second time this has happened to me on Audiogon: I listed an item for sale, with a price that said, "or best offer", and the buyer offered me full price instead of trying to negotiate down. In both cases I got $50 more that I would have settled for!
