Amps - Peak Output Current

There always seems to be a lot of discussion here are using an amp with high Peak Output Current as one of the stats. Here is an interesting read from Charles Hansen of Ayre acoustics on this issue:

Here's typical add for a $500 Sony 5.1 Home Theatre System touting peak wattage right up front. As if the more peak wattage the system has the better it's going to sound.

There was an even better deal in the weekly sunday Best Buy ad flyer. It was 5.1 channel system with an amazing 1200 watts for just $300. It's actually a great value but what a marketing gimmick peak wattage ratings are. Reminds me of the Pioneer receiver I bought years ago when the big marketing specs included distortion ratings. It was rated at something like .0005 Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). That spec looked pretty impressive to me back in the day.
