Spires vs. ReQuest (Possibly buyers remorse?)

I own re-quests, and I have to say, that they are probably one of the best speakers i've heard, with great off axis response, and a huge deep stage. HOWEVER, mine required significant work to get them to sound good. needed a biamp setup. Careful selection of speaker cable and associated...

Cans.. or what to do when your ML system is hijacked

I have a bedroom system for that... I am using paradigm speakers in that, very clean sound, and actually somewhat akin to electrostatic sound / voicing. Very dynamic and good with most music. If I really need to be quiet I have a set of senn 580s (used to have 600s) but I sold them, bought...

    not your typical ESL57....

well I took off the back dust covers, and I think I found the reason why they just sound "ok" but not great. Every single bass panel is delaminated, like torn literally at the corner. So far just opened up one speaker. I am Amazed that they played at all considering the condition they are in. :/

Equipment you would not own because of looks alone

bottlehead preamp. In fact I did own a early version. The open bottom, cheap stamped metal top, and dual volume controls just left a lot to be desired. It did sound ok. Im also on the shelf about my "Stacked quads" (see other thread). They are just HUGE. On the other hand. I think my...

    not your typical ESL57....

i'll try to post some pictures when I get home later. Im actually half thinking about SET. This might keep me from trying to play more complex rock and classical, and force me to stick more towards what the 57's excel at. After all, my requests rock out amazingly. Actually remarkably, I see...

    not your typical ESL57....

I have gotten them somewhat better dialed in. Need to figure out amps for them. My understanding is that you need to be careful vacuuming them. From what I read if they are actually quads, they have a dustcover, then a second film like dust cover, so they are pretty good with dust. From what...

    not your typical ESL57....

all 4 work. Not quite as transparent as my requests. A lot of what I read is that Audio People LTD was a company that used other manufacturers drivers... they look like quads... but are they? Not quite sure what I have. Running them with a golden tube se40 currently... They sound good but not...

    Problem with ML Source

if it has pre-outs... why not get get an ECI amp, sometimes manufacturers gain match their integrated amps and power amp...so you can do just this, otherwise a few simple attenuators or resistors will do the trick. would be a good question to ask the designer, ask him for the gain levels of...

    Spire/Summit off axis?

my re-quests can definitely rock... and have great off axis response to boot. I will say that it took either biamp with the sa250 or the two brystons to really "rock" without a second sa250 they just did not really have the dynamics. Ironically, after getting a second sa250, I like the CJ...

    ML Summit X's not matched??

matched numbers or not, after speaking with ML as others have noted, they match to reference, and then number them. Apparently they make them in a similar timeframe, however they are NOT made together on the same jig. That said, all the balance issues I ever had were due to brown truck damage...

    upgrade request?

Yea. They do sound quite good. I have to admit. I have a pair of bryston 7bst, two CJ Sonographe sa250s and various other tube amps.... I just switched to the CJ sonographe for summer (brystons put out a bit of heat into the room)... I think the CJ are more musical, but the Bryston has more...

    upgrade request?

Im not ever getting rid of them.... I'll always have them (from my grandpa). But im wondering what the sound differences would be (no place local to go listen). How would the reQuest compare to the visa and the clarity? What about other non x-stat ones? Is newer really better when it comes to...

    upgrade request?

Question.... my requests have upgraded XO and new stators, however I find myself wondering if upgrading to something like the clarity with xstat would help (assuming I have a sub - which I do - a sealed tannoy) what kind of sound quality differences can I expect going to a newer speaker?

    tightening loose binding posts!

it also appears "CMC" makes a reasonably priced pure copper, and gold plated copper... pretty sure its against rules to post a link, so im just going to say google it.

    tightening loose binding posts!

any idea about material of the logan ones? Diyhifisupply has some OFHC copper ones... how does copper, vs, brass sound. Its a hard thing to AB I think... THe only other high quality copper ones I know of are the cardas ones.... what about brass?

For those who have a whole house surge protector...

JonFo... Did you a/b with powergy installed / turn on vs off. From their installation instructions it looks like it can be enabled or disable with the flip of a breaker... looks like its supposed to be connected like another 20amp circuit... Reason im curious is I hear differences in a lot...

    tightening loose binding posts!

For a while now, I had been getting a slight distortion in one side. I went to change cables.... and noticed that one binding post was quite loose. The next day I opened up the requests, found that indeed the right post was quite loose. I tightened it up. I also noted that the other ones while...

    New woofer for SL3's

you might try calling the guys at madisound.... they are really pretty good. The one thing you can try with a sub is, a passive reinforcement setup. Figure out the response curve of the sl3, and adjust the sub to "fill". My experience has been equalization circuits always seem to have sonic...

    cats and martin logans

dont worry. I dont plan on decalwing a cat.. I do plan on adopting one, and will look for one thats had it done (they still need homes). so, I still am curious... does the fur stick to the speakers? I know I can vaccuum... or use bitter apple... but, will it be a problem
