So I guess I'm not alone here. I bought a pair of Vantage from a'gon two weeks ago. I finally get the chance to have them connected tonight and exactly same issue happened! At about 100db I started to hear this "static, fuzz and crackles" from both panels. :(
Here's the "bright" - hopefully...
I have sold my VPI Scout recently. Don't get me wrong, it sounds great! However, I'm really not a fan of the unipivot design. Especially when there's a 9 years old jumping around...
Anyway, after some research I've kinda settled on 2 brands: Clearaudio (Marantz TT-15S1/Concept) and Rega (P5)...
I will double check once I get home. But if my memory serves me right, the 830842 is what I got.
Yes my friend, buy it from Martin Logan is the only choice. I know it hurts, $500 for a pair of woofer units! On the bright side, they quoted me $340 each last year.. :)
I got two from here about 10 months ago. $112 CAD each.
VIFA PL26WR09-04 and here's the spec
It's now backorder.. These suckers are really hard to find just FYI. I would suggest you just buy it from Martin Logan as you won't be able to find them easily, if not never, in north america.
Good...
How much tube power is enough to drive a pair of Vantage? Consider it has a powered subwoofer (class D amp iirc), running a tube on panels = bi-amping.
So the question is: 50W triode good enough?
Kinda running into a dilemma at this moment.
With 2-3k I can definitely get a pretty good tube amp on Audiogon. On the other hand, a very good condition pair of Vantage only costs 2.5-2.8k. Should I spend the money on a pair of Vantage or go bi-amping my Sequel IIs (with new panels, woofers and...
I also have a pair of Sequel IIs from 1991.
Here's what I did last October, phoned ML, talked to Jim and made the following upgrades:
New SL3 pairs $650
AC Board upgrade with sensing wires (so the panels will be collecting less dust in idle), $190
Plus $50 freight the total is $890.

tyvm. The 280 v12r has been sold already so I guess the only option now is a v12i.
You mentioned earlier that Cary has more "tone" than C-J. Do you actually mean C-J is more naturally sound? I'm looking for an amp without too much alteration/coloration, as accurate as possible.
Thanks Spike. One question regarding tube rolling. If I understand correctly, when replacing any EL-34 tube on 280, you gotta replace the whole 12 pack. Is that true on Sixpacs as well? Or just 6 of them since it's a mono amp.
Price:
C-J Premier 140, 2.9-3k used
Sixpac, 3k new with upgrades
Cary Audio CAD 280 v12R, 2.3-2.4k used
Gain
C-J Premier 140 has a 27.8dB gain.
CAD 280 v12 has 21.6dB (8 ohm tap into 8 ohms) and 18.6dB (4 ohm tap into 4 ohms) in triode mode. And 25.2dB and 22.1dB in ultralinear mode.
Anybody...
Give Martin Logan customer service a phone call. You can mail the circuit board to them for upgrade/service. For panel/woofer I would suggest you to just buy new pairs.
