Hola. When I got into the hi-end goods, one of my first speakers were the Duettas. That was around 1986 year. I bought them in Sound Components at Miami, and I met Dennis Chern, who now works for Martin Logan. Some friends did buy the Duettas too. At that time, our high humidity destroyed them, in six months, all of them were totally out of use. I remember the clarity of the strings of the guitar. Also the bass was outstanding. At that time, most of us were using Mark Levison gear. You needed some power to drive them. They are not too easy to drive. Deep bass, and outstanding clarity as I recall, but perhaps what you do like, I do not. When you have too much dynamics on certain musical notes from a guitar or a piano, or the female voice, my feeling or what I sense is like being in a cartoon. My ears sudden are into the singer's throat, and when that note ends, I am sitting back at my listening position. The other musical instruments remains at the stage. With my CLXs, the dynamics, are well controlled. I do not get this. On the other hand, I do think as you do too, that they are not extended in the bass notes as the Duettas, and definitive, they need one or two subs as a complement. One unit, if your room is small. When buying the CLXs, you have to think that they are designed in two parts, and a sub is a most, if you want that deep bass. The stage, the size of the musical instrument(s), the timbre, the feeling of the musician(s) the air between the instruments, the harmonic texture, the coherence between the piano notes (easy to understand what the left hand is doing vs the right hand in a piano), and yes, perhaps not too dynamic, but it is a truly different speaker on ML gear. Do not get me wrong. I do like a lot the Duettas, and I am going to be nailed when I am going to say, that are better than the Magneplanars. I had also the Timpani IIIB around 84. The transition of the crossover point at high frequency, makes a mess...and I think it is due to the phase shift. There is where the coherence is not possible, even having a very good flat frequency response. The ML gear is free of this. At the beginning with ML, 87, what drove me crazy was the ML transparency of the sound. ML had made a big evolution for good, and I do know that the other very good brands had done the same thing. I think it is a reason why I do like so much the way that ML sings. Please friends, excuse my dare to express my way of thinking regarding to a such brilliant, well design and great performance as the Duettas. Happy listening!
