What's your favorite music to hear through your Logans?

We are all in this hobby, for the most part, because we love music and we love the way our Logans reproduce it. There is a lot of music that I enjoy, but there are certain discs that just blow me away when I am listening to them through my Logans. This is the music that enraptures you, that brings out the goose pimples and puts you in a state of audio nirvana. I am always looking for more of this kind of music, so I like to seek out the opinions of others in a quest to find something new and special.

So, the question is: What are your two or three (or five or six) absolute favorite discs (cd or vinyl) to listen to through your Martin Logan system?

For me, the list would include: "Retrospective" by Natalie Merchant, "The Girl in the Other Room" by Diana Krall, and "Imagine" or "Songbird" by Eva Cassidy. O.K., so I am partial to female vocalists.

Runner's up from other music genres would include: "Tone Poems" by David Grisman and Tony Rice, "Beautiful Dreamer -- the Songs of Stephen Foster" by various artists, and "Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites Performed on Double Bass" by Edgar Meyer.

All of these recordings simply blow me away on my Logans. So what knocks your socks off?

To be totally honest, I get the biggest rush hearing the music I compose on my synth on my speakers. After that, pretty much any female vocal, anything by Ken Nordine, Alan Parsons (instrumentals...my favorite) and for movies, soundtracks composed by Hans Zimmer.

I really liked his music from the movie, "The Weather Man."

For pure enjoyment: IQ – Dark Matter (excellent Prog rock)

IQ is an astounding discovery for someone who has loved Prog rock since the early seventies and bands like Genesis. The recordings are quite good, not reference by any stretch, but upsampled to 88.2/16 via the PC, they are very good in Trifield multichannel.

For absolute reference quality multichannel High-Def audio and great tunes: Porcupine tree – Stupid Dream and Deadwing albums in DVD-A

Porcupine tree is also a modern Prog Rock band, with more of a metal bend to it in albums like Deadwing The 5.1 mixes are the best I've ever heard. Truly enveloping with great depth of stage as well.

For showing off how well a Martin Logan set can reproduce full spectrum sound and dynamics: The Jacques Loussier Trio Best of plays Bach on SACD

This one really demonstrates why one needs solid mid-bass performance in the center channel, as the upright Bass is often anchored in the center. There is a Bass solo that is stunning with a system that can deliver balanced dynamics in the bass and mid-bass. Clear highs also reveal every nuance of the piano and cymbals. You’s swear the quartet is in the room. The hit to chest of that Bass and Drum kit is astounding.

Great Recommendations!

Wow. Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions. Some of them I know well, but many I have never heard of. Lots of great ideas for my never-ending quest for new music. Keep them coming.

I would also highly recommend several of the recordings from Mapleshade Records. Their cds are less than $10.00 each when you buy four or more, and their recording techniques are second to none. Wonderful audiophile quality sound.

Particularly good is: "Harp, Steel, and Guts" by the Blue Rider Trio; "Austin Backalley Blue" by Sweetman and his Southside Groove Kings; and "Mojo" by Big Joe Maher and Jeff Sarli. These are all blues cds, but they have other genres too. Happy Listening.
