Vision X play-fi setup

Hiya - so I've had my Vision X soundbar for a while, and am just getting around to setting up play-fi. The instructions are ... interesting. It seems that you must connect directly to the soundbar in access point mode, and then tell it how to connect to your router via the app. Seems simple enough. The thing is, putting the soundbar in access point mode doesn't seem to generate an SSID to connect to it directly. I've followed the directions, the soundbar displays access point on the speaker... but I'm not sure how to connect to it directly. The manual (page 15 https://www.martinlogan.com/pdf/manuals/manual-motion-vision-x.pdf) doesn't offer any hints. Opening the play-fi app doesn't locate the speaker (obviously, because it's not connected to my network, and I'm not connected to it)...

What am I doing wrong?
