HI All,
First post here. So, hi. I'm looking forward to exchanging ideas with you all.
I have a specific question for you CLS vets. I have what were original CLSII's which have been since upgraded to the A version (pretty simple upgrade). Now, I am comtemptlating replacing my panels with new ones from ML. I'm also considering upgrading to the Z power supply/electronics box. In other words, upgrade my CLS IIA's to CLSIIZ'z.
I am totally in love with my current panels. But, I have noticed that the right speaker has lost a fair amount of sensitivity. The imballance can be balanced out with a balance control on a preamp. I would estimate the difference in sensitiviy between the the two is the left channel is about 3dB louder than the right or about a factor of twice. Other than that, the speaker sounds fine. But, I thought, this might be a good time to do a general upgrade.
By way of a little background, I drive the panels with a Audio Research D-250 MK II Servo tube power amp. I love my basic frequency balance but I think the extreme high frequncies, say 7.5KHz up, could be a bit more brilliant. Perhaps the less severe high frequency impedance characteristic of the IIZ's will help the D-250 with those frequencies. Any thoughts on this?
One feature of the IIZ power supplies that I really like is the automatic power up feature. Currently, I unplug my panels to keep them from gathering dust. As I understand, the IIZ power supply will go into a power down mode if it hasn't seen any audio activity after certain period of time. This is a very attractive feature to me.
Here are my questions; Should I,
1) Leave well enough alone and do not touch the speakers.
2) Replace the panels but keep the current power supply box
3) Do a full IIZ upgrade.
In general, what do you all think? Is this a worthwhile exercise? Why???
Thanks, Sparky
