Digital TV Transition

A friend of mine asked me this question to which I was not able to give a positive answer: "I have a feed coming into my house from the cable company. Before the box, I have this signal split into 4. After the DTV transition date, what would happen if I hooked a D-to-A set top box to one of those feeds and the box to a tv? Would there be any digital info on the line for basic staions?" Obviously. she does not want to pay the cable company the cost of renting another box. I told her I did not think this set-up would work and advised her to purchse an antenna to feed the converter. Any ideas on this?

You are right. The converter boxes you speak of are only for ATSC signals via an antenna.
