This should be fun!

You're stranded on a desert island. A Genie appears and gives you a portable CD player and asks you to
pick 10 CDs. What would you pick?

Here are mine:

1. Radiohead - OK Computer
2. Electric Light Orchestra - New World Record
3. Days of the New - Days of the New 2
4. Best of Dinah Washington
5. Linda Rondstadt w/Nelson Riddle & His Orchestra
6. Aldo Nova - A Portrait of Aldo Nova
7. Diana Krall - Live in Paris
8. Howard Jones - Best of Howard Jones
9. The Doors - The Best of the Doors
10.Toy Matinee - Toy Matinee

My friends think I have "bizarre" tastes in music. I prefer the term "eclectic" ! ;)

For the moment being, my choices would be, in no particular order:

- Mozart - Requiem (Nikolas Harnoncourt & Concentus Musicus Wien)
- Chopin - Polonaises (Maurizio Pollini)
- Bach - Cello-Suiten (Mstislav Rostropovitch)
- La Folia (Jordi Savall)
- Jacques Loussier - The Best of Play Bach
- Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert
- Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
- Tangerine Dream - Ricochet
- Rammstein - Reise, Reise
- A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step

Kaliar

Life is good with ML !! :)

Great idea Tom - I especially like the twist with the idea of favorite music rather than 'most audiophile-approved' (which is also fun and informative).

Here are mine, in no particular order:

Bach – Brandenberg concertos #2,5,& 6
Beethoven – String Quartets Opus 132 and Opus 59 #2. Vegh Quartet
Richard Strauss – Electra. Solti conducting, Birgit Nilsson singing – Can an opera count as a single disc?
Schubert – Symphony #9 'Unfinished'
Prokofiev – Romeo & Juliet suite
Bartok – Concerto for Orchestra
Shostakovich – String quartets #4,8, & 9 – Fitzwilliam quartet
Beastie Boys – Check your head
Eno – Here Come the Warm Jets.
Genesis – Supper’s Ready
Roxy Music – Country Life

Spawn of the Devil!

It's not a genie, it's the devil and his cruel joke is I have to listen to CD only!

Do I gotta choose?

Boy, it's great to see that a bunch of ML-heads out there dig such widely varied material. I'm looking forward to setting up my Odysseys next month as my first hi-fi set of speakers after over a year of ownership (long story) and had been a bit anxious about how happy they'd be spewing heavy metal and garage revival lo-fi. (I'm particularly tickled to find a couple of Tool fans on the list; can't wait to hear how "Ticks & Leeches" sounds on my new system.)

OK, I'm at a bit of a disadvantage writing this on the road without access to my CD cabinet, but I'm still coming up with more than I can cram into 10 slots. Some are old faves, some are recent finds I think will stick around.

Sinead O'Connor - The Lion and the Cobra
AC/DC - Back In Black
Peter Gabriel - So
Def Leppard - Pyromania
Ani Difranco - Living in Clip
Sergei Prokofiev - Romeo & Juliet
Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On
Beatles - Abbey Road
Nellie McKay - Get Away from Me
Rage Against The Machine - The Battle of Los Angeles
Juliana Hatfield - Only Everything
Jackson Browne - The Pretender
Susan Tedeschi - Just Won't Burn
Guns 'n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground
Stevie Wonder - Innervisions
Joan Jett - I Love Rock 'n' Roll

Hi sakhavi,

(I'm particularly tickled to find a couple of Tool fans on the list; can't wait to hear how "Ticks & Leeches" sounds on my new system.)
You'll love it !! Lateralus was one of the first CDs I played after getting my Odysseys... Throughout the whole album, I had a big grin on my face ! This CD is an example of well recorded and interesting music ! Apart from "Ticks and Leeches", I particularly enjoy listening to "The Patient" and "Reflection"...

In my listening room, which is not huge, the Odysseys can play quite loud without distortion. With 500 clean Watts available per channel at 4 Ohms, those woofers can pressurize the place in a hurry !! :D

I hope you get your speakers set soon, so you can enjoy your music.

Gosh! where do I start?

Hi Guys,
I am fairly new to this forum, have been an audiophile for years (since early eighties). What suprises me is that how very little of this music you guys are mentioning, I have heard of.? I know everyone has different tastes in music, but there was some that I did recognize on peoples lists and some that I am not that fond of, but I would say I only recognized about 10% of what I saw.
I know this is a little off topic for this thread, but I am in desperate need of new material. I will list some of my favorites, in order of preference and maybe some of you fellow members can help me with some new material. I listen to most anything but country and rap.
My favorites for a Desert Island:
Patrick O'hearn - So Flows the Current (actually anything by him)
Roger Waters - Amused to Death (ditto, a truly brilliant musician)
Gladiator Soundtrack
Mercy Me - everything!
Diana Krall - When I look in your eyes
Rebecca St. James - Pray
Natalie Merchant - Tigerlily
Handels - Messiah
John Mayer - Heavier Things
Beck - Sea Change
Early Tori Amos (Little Earthquakes & Under the Pink)
Killers - Hot Fuss (just discovered, a little trendy)

Well that gives you guys an idea of what I like. I need some new stuff, I have really been wearing this stuff out over the years :(

Thanks so much,
Dwayne

Hi Dwayne,
Thanks for your fun question!

Although my first recommendation is not related to your current interests, I would like to share what I think best demonstrates what makes classical music such a powerful communicator and mover - and so I suggest
Beethoven, String Quartets Opus 132 and Opus 127 (Vegh Quartet)
If you like those, then also the six Beethoven Opus 18 quartets (Berg Quartet)

You mentioned Handel - Messiah
If you like it for the choral parts, then I highly recommend Vivaldi - Gloria. Have you seen Runaway Train (movie with John Voigt)? There is a very moving scene with him standing on top of the train with the "Et In Terra Pax" playing in the background.
Also, Mendelssohn is a very under-appreciated composer. His Elijah is an incredible choral work (I way prefer it to the Messiah).
If you like the Messiah for the arias, then I highly recommend Bach - St. Matthew's Passion. This has some very well-known music in it.

You mentioned Beck, Tori Amos, John Mayer, and Killers.
I suggest that you try Daniel Lanois - Shine. Lanois and Brian Eno are/were 2 of the most sought-after producers in the music biz, so the production is top-notch. Lanois is also a very good musician.
For modern, trendy stuff that is interesting and good...
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Stars - Set Yourself on Fire
Interpol - Antics (only if you think you would enjoy it if Ian Curtis (from Joy Division) came back to life and became the lead singer for Franz Ferdinand).

I hope these and suggestions from other posters help you to discover some new stuff!

My list

1. Massive Attack - Mezzanine
2. Smashing Pumpkins - Gish
3. Underworld - Beaucoup Fish
4. Dead Can Dance - Towards the Within
5. Radiohead - Kid A
6. The Crystal Method - Tweekend
7. Portishead - Dummy
8. The Future Sound of London - Dead Cities
9. Nirvana - Bleach
10. Chemical Brothers - Surrender

Damn, no room for jazz.
