Room Acoustics - Absorption Panels Behind ML's

After having experimented with absorption, diffusion, and nothing at all… I figured I’d chime in on this topic with my own personal findings. Upfront, I’m not looking to start any dispute, or discredit anyone else’s findings, but simply adding some helpful input based on my own personal...

Room Acoustics - Absorption Panels Behind ML's

Hi Rich, I just came across this thread looking for insight on this very topic. Thanks for the information on the rear wave issue. It gave me some direction. 👍

    Quest Restoration Project

Absolutely! If you look at my other posts, you will see issues I had to fix with the power supplies and associated connectors. The tech staff at Martin Logan were outstanding throughout this project. They claim I pretty much encountered any flaw that could arise with age and fixed it properly...

    Quest Restoration Project

Thank You for the compliment! The woofers are original. They were in outstanding condition so I chose to re-use them. I ran the serial numbers of the panels by Martin Logan and it turned out that they were once replaced. The story I got was that the speakers were still performing poorly even...

Yes... I have seen that, but thanks for sharing! Glad to know that I'm not the only wackadoo that invests so much time in such a project (lol).

    Quest Restoration Project

Well folks... this is it! The project is completed as of today! I am very pleased with the turnout. They look just as I envisioned. At this point I am attaching all new Velcro patches and all new closed foam Neoprene strips and re-assembling: Finished!!! Its been raining all weekend...

Hi Steve, Thanks for the compliments! The color is a black satin textured finish by a product called DuraTex. It is made in Florida USA.

    Quest Restoration Project

After having to back burner the project for a while, I finally got on top of it again and sprayed the boxes with a product called DuraTex. This paint was formulated for concert touring speakers that need a durable finish for rigorous use. It is a little challenging to work with, but the result...

    Quest Restoration Project

Phase 1 complete and not as bad of a task as I anticipated. For anyone wanting to take on the task of removing the Nextel finish... Denatured Alcohol is the key. Nextel dilutes when it comes in contact with it. Be prepared for a messy job, but not hard and as much fun as cleaning 50 greasy...

    The Dreaded Nextel Goo Syndrome

In case anyone decides to take the plunge and strip off the Nextel finish... Denatured Alcohol works like a charm. I will cover it in my DIY Quest project posts, but thought I'd mention it here as a tip.

    Quest Restoration Project

And so it begins. Now that I know that the ML Quests that I saved from meeting their fate at the landfill function properly, its time for the full restoration. First step... the strip down and removal of the Nextel finish. I think I'd rather get a root canal... but here goes.

    The Dreaded Nextel Goo Syndrome

Cool and thanks for the info! I planned on wearing coveralls, rubber gloves, eye protection, etc and doing the removal on a plastic sheet outside in an industrial area so I should be in good shape.

    New To Forum and Quest

Chatting with Martin Logan Tech Support... they said that if I'm only talking a 1 or 2 db difference between 20 year old panels, I am doing REAL good! Believe it or not, they say that they are not 100% equal even when they are new. I found that comforting and somewhat interesting. They basically...

    Quest Amplifier/Crossover Module Heat Buildup

Sorry... I referred to an amp / crossover module when maybe the proper term is power supply / crossover module. I said amplifier only because of the step up transformer power supply design of this unit which controls the electrostatic panel. Call it what you may... this photo is of the passive...
