Cheap solid state stereo power amp to drive 13a's for ocasional HT use (to save tube life of main amp)

Behringer A800 Got 2 of them from Amazon to drive my surrounds. Cheap'n'cheerful, quite powerful and efficient. Worth a shot I'd think

    Martin Logan Shower Cleaning PDF

I would only use demineralised water for cleaning the panels.

    ReQuests… harsh high end

I've found that instead of stabbing in the dark, it is preferable to stick a microphone on the listening position and use REW to measure each speaker (or both). Then you can change distance from side/back walls, tow, rake, drapes, what have you. You may even find that a slightly assymetrical...

New panels - yet REW thinks they're rubbish!

Easy to test, but that would be mainly around the crossover frequency

Here we're talking mechanical tolerances, materials stretching etc. different ball game.

New panels - yet REW thinks they're rubbish!

Break-in, ha ha, particularly in electronics that are at operating temp. People in various forums 'break-in' DACs and cables for weeks. They are smoothing the electrons or something.. Alternatively the brain gets used to it - habituation. Neural pathways are far more likely to be at play.

New panels - yet REW thinks they're rubbish!

I agree, panels measure very poorly yet sound glorious I've also found small mic movements leading to dramatically different FR curves on top of that.

New panels - yet REW thinks they're rubbish!

The power amp drivng the panels can provide up to 1200 per channel at 2 Ohms, so miss daisy it ain't. Every time I fire it up it's a gamble if the circuit breaker will kick in ha ha.. Still, would it be safe to get rid of the resistors?😵

New panels - yet REW thinks they're rubbish!

So Jon do you think the panels will perform better crossed over at 340Hz? You're giving me ideas now:sneaky: As for my obsession to keep the signal path to the panels 'clean and unmolested' that's gone gone gone... I will soon be experimenting with surround-extraction from stereo (Surround...

New panels - yet REW thinks they're rubbish!

Assuming at the higher SPL level the old panels would perform similarly, the main difference I see is the 12db dip from 7K to 12K has been replaced by two smaller 6db dips 8-9K and 10-12K. 3K-5K the new panels are probably a few db louder Did I desperately need new panels? Probably not...

New panels - yet REW thinks they're rubbish!

OK, some graphs overlaid The bottom is the old panels. Measured at lower SPL, but it is the shape we are interested in. Same microphone, same location, same smoothing (1/24 oct), same power amp, same speaker location, same room acoustics Displaying 250Hz - 20K, as Xover is 250Hz Mic is aiming...

New panels - yet REW thinks they're rubbish!

Of course, the Stereophile graph, I had forgotten about it. Thanks Jeff! Although I can't hear much over 13-14KHz myself, it's good to know that the response measurements I got are not all that weird

New panels - yet REW thinks they're rubbish!

..exactly which is why I'd be interested in other people's REW measurements with the mic in their actual head position. Maybe my results are normal, hard to tell otherwise. From 10K upwards the drop is steep, at 20K 10db down roughly Yes, a microphone cannot approximate two ears and a brain...

New panels - yet REW thinks they're rubbish!

I've been running the SL3s with the new panels for a few weeks now, and they do sound nice. However according to REW frequency response is complete garbage, especially from 10K onwards. we're talking over 10db down, like something is wrong with them. That's with 1/12 octave smoothing. I had a...

    Saying hello from the UK

Lucky man! In my experience, it may be wise to make covers for them (Amazon pillowcases?) and always keep them covered when not in use. Once they age, hoovering and showering won't bring them back.

    panels: SL3 vs Summit

I've also made covers for the panels and now always use them any time the panels are not in use. Easy-peasy, cotton pillow cases from Amazon, they fit nicely (need to cut them with scissors at the bottom a few inches) Got two pairs, one looks fancy, inner one plain soft cotton. They come on/off...

    panels: SL3 vs Summit

Thanks for the headsup! I've had a look at the crossover caps and decided to leave them alone. They are not overworked or cooked like power amp electrolytics tend to be, and my crossover is the last SL3 incarnation with only one electrolytic anyway (low pass for the woofers I think)

    panels: SL3 vs Summit

Well the replacement panels arrived at last - took them 6 months! They do sound glorious, glad I kept them. In fact they sound better than when I had them first time, since the old panels were already 6 years old back then. Quite efficient too, at the listening position they are not far off...

SL3: Woofer Replacement, Panel Repair, and RoadKill Damping Tweak

Thanks for bumping the thread. These Scanspeak woofers are available in the UK apparently, good to know!

    Not a glowing report

You should see how the Maggie LRS fared on a similar test of AudioScienceReview. Not at the same level as mid-sized MLs, but dipoles and spinorama-type measurements don't see eye-to-eye
