New ML owner (ESL X) Amp Questions

I use a 55wpc Lavardin IT in a 14ft x 23ft room and they play louder than I need - and I like loud orchestral and rock music at times. It might be worth trying a few amps in your room because it might not be the wpc but the ability to drive what can be quite a challenging load.

    System #499 (Ascent)

Thanks for your suggestions, Leporello and Tmort. I've tried putting the panels in various positions including between the speakers and the wall and I've not found the best place for them yet! One reason I placed them where they are now is because I'm not sure of the effect of any reflections...

    System #499 (Ascent)

I was reminded to come back here following a forum activity digest email today. I've had the Ascents for over 10 years. I'd been looking for a secondhand pair of Summits (I've heard the Xs but I can't afford them) but with no success, and in any case they're not so young any more. Therefore, I...

    Ascent Fault

Thanks for the update, Alisdair. I have Ascents and fortunately this hasn't happened to me but it's always good to know that ML support is still there. I hope things are good for you now!

Acoustical wall panels - any Pics or advise ?

hi Rob, I didn't compare them. I met the GIK team at a show and felt they knew what they were talking about, then I got a 10% voucher. I didn't want to spend too much in case they didn't make much of a difference so ended up with just the 2 portable panels. I'm pleased I have them - the sound is...

Acoustical wall panels - any Pics or advise ?

Perhaps I can add a couple of thoughts here. I bought some GIK freestanding panels a few months ago. I'm pleased I bought freestanding ones because I've been able to try them in a multitude of different positions, including behind the speakers to attenuate reflections from the front wall...

    Ascent just died

I have Ascents. I'm not sure where the fuse is, but just wanted to mention that you can remove the rear panel. It's just screwed on. The circuit board is attached to it and it's easy to see everything when you take it off. Obviously be aware of the wires connected to it, though as I recall they...

    System #499 (Ascent)

I thought I would update this since I'm here. I now have a Hana ML in place of the Benz SL. It's a great cartridge, better than the Benz while being cheaper, so I think it's good value.

    Failure mode of Ascent panels?

I'd like to ask a quick question about panel failure. My Ascents are now 23 years old according to the serial number checker and I'm pretty sure one of the panels is slowly failing - it's gone quieter than the other one. So my question is, when a panel fails does it fail open circuit or closed...

    Dampening loudspeaker (woofer) frame

I used Deflex on the cone-facing surfaces of the woofer baskets in my previous speakers to reduce reflections. I felt this worked well. Perhaps part of it was a damping effect too. But as you say, it's quick, doesn't damage anything and it's reversible if you don't like it.

    Considering buying ML Ascents?

I have a pair of the original Ascents I purchased SH about 5 years ago. They've performed without problems. When I purchased them I removed the panels and showered them as some on here recommend, but I've not done anything else to them. I use them with original Townshend Isolda cable from a...

One Ascent gone quieter. Anyone heard of this before?

You're not going to believe this... I've messed up royally here. After doing a dozen tests I got myself really confused. And I had that nagging feeling in my head. So this morning I did 2 tests and wrote everything down -- what I should have done from the start of course. By swapping the two...

One Ascent gone quieter. Anyone heard of this before?

Sadly you're right I've spent several days on this. I've washed the second panel, swapped panels between speakers, swapped speaker cables between left and right... I think it's come down to the panel, not least because it's ok when I stand up. A new pair of panels is £1950 from Absolute Sounds...

One Ascent gone quieter. Anyone heard of this before?

Thank you! So it may be the panel anyway. Of course, that would make sense since it's the sensitive bit. I'll try switching them around and see. It'll be a few days before I can get to it, but I'll report back :).

One Ascent gone quieter. Anyone heard of this before?

Thanks, C.A.P. I tried swapping the speaker cables. I even swapped over the speakers left to right just to check. It's definitely the speaker. I showered the panel in case it was just dirty, but I don't think it's the panel because the central image stays in the same place for sweeps from 20Hz...

One Ascent gone quieter. Anyone heard of this before?

Over the last few weeks one of my Ascents has dropped in volume. I don't know the amount but I would say the image has moved to 2/3-1/3. I've done sweeps on the speakers and there's no difference in sound output between the panel and woofer so I don't think it's the panel. Has anyone ever heard...

Shape of Ascent panels, and wrinkles

I was away last week so took the opportunity to switch them off before I went. Last night when I returned I removed the panels and reshaped them. I cut out a pattern based on the shape at the top and replicated it at the bottom of each. I reformed them over my knee, and was surprised at how...

Shape of Ascent panels, and wrinkles

thanks for your thoughts, Tosh. I'll have to power them down again, take them apart and see if I can gently reintroduce the curvature at the bottom of the panels. While it's true that the rails force the panels to keep a maximum width, on the Ascents at least the tolerance is quite large.
