How often should this be considered? What about in smoky environement's? We have a chimeny that has a poor initial draw so there is a few times during the season we start off a bit "smoky" in the in the room. Can any gentle cleaning agents be used? Or just water? RO over well water?

Why would you want to replace the existing connection between the four connectors? Why not just leave the factory metal jumper and attach the speaker cables to the top set?

No that's not a silly question. People do all kinds of things and sometimes forget some of the basic things to check for on problems. I think a banana plug that had a means of expanding (adjustable) would take care of the issue.
