    The Return to Vinyl

JLasher, for fun, I did a similar experiment years ago, running one side of Tubular Bells (about 26 mins duration) against the CD in real time. At the end, the difference in duration was less than 100 milliseconds. Can’t recall which was “fastest”, i.e. which “won the race”. I think it was the...

Martin Logans and 3-Dimensionality of Sources.

LOL! I’ve managed to largely avoid playing CDs for over 30 years! In fact I generally manage to play music without mechanisms (includes hard drives) and the not-always-reliable internet. I do own a modest collection of several hundred CDs (bought another new one this week). It’s good to give...

Martin Logans and 3-Dimensionality of Sources.

Please note several recent posts have disappeared (Restore from backup causing history loss?). No problem. In Martin Logan we have one of the most phase coherent and revealingly accurate loudspeakers on the market (at any price) which is exactly what we need for the “3D test”. This test, until...

Martin Logans and 3-Dimensionality of Sources.

For fun, I explored the idea that CD compilation albums might prove to be a guide to “3D Ready” CD originals... I mentioned one compilation earlier in which the first half was 2D and the 2nd half was 3D. This new compilation CD features 17 tracks. BTW, the various album songs weren’t clustered...

Martin Logans and 3-Dimensionality of Sources.

OK, so here’s what was tested : 1. Original UK Vinyl (my 16/44 RIP) 2. DVD-A Original UK Vinyl (Studio vinyl RIP) Pure Direct stereo. 3. CD Transfer, Pure Direct stereo 4. DVD-A Pure Direct stereo 5-6 are not same source as 1-4 so comments are only for the sake of completeness. 5. DVD-A Summit...

Martin Logans and 3-Dimensionality of Sources.

To maintain balance, yesterday I tested needledrops of LPs.... I trawled through 34 before finding one that failed the test. This was larger than any digital sample I’ve tested so far. Results appear to correlate with the industry(?) belief that “virtually all” of LPs are rendered as absolute...

With reference to what Gordon has said, if you feel that your source data is of poor quality for listening/evaluation then don’t use it. If you are uncomfortable about it just find another disc.

Thanks for the feedback RHD. It appears you are immune (!) I haven’t read all of George’s Blog but I did read enough to understand that if a user is fortunate enough to possess an “Absolute Polarity” player/DAC by default (as opposed to “Inverted Polarity”) then they will be mostly unaffected...

Martin Logans and 3-Dimensionality of Sources.

An infallible test for determining the “rightness/wrongness” of CDs, using Martin Logans? ML users will be familiar with the concept of 3D soundstaging and the way MLs excel at this. What may have been LESS obvious is the DIVERGENCE between LP & CD. LPs generate quasi-realistic 3D soundstaging...

    Vantage HELP!!

Beware of static discharge INTO the panel(!) If you have carpets prone to static they can pack a wallop under certain circumstances (or even synthetic clothes). Typical effect might be to damage the sensors which automatically de-activate the HT supply to the panel or even the HT supply itself...

    Flutter on vantage speakers

Dear Stephen, Have you tried tightening the bolts on the panel mounting brackets? Excessive bass (or even moderate bass at high volume) can loosen them. I have a suspicion this can affect the efficiency of the panel but if they are loose enough maybe the bass enclosure can interact causing...

Do your ML's portray musicians/voices in FRONT of, or BEHIND, the speaker plane?

For me, lead vocals are generally just a whisker behind the speaker plane. I damp the back wave using lined curtains and vertical blinds immediately behind the panels (about 4-5ft away) but allow more reflection either side. I know this wouldn’t give anything like full spectrum damping but it...

Thinking of Purchasing a Turntable; Any and All Advice Welcome!

Actually, jLasher, this is one of the healthiest budgets for startup that I've seen for some time! ;) It's more often the case that someone thinks they can "do justice" to vinyl for $1000 or less. 3K gives you choices. Personally I prefer new gear but if you want to take a short cut to the "high...

Technics 1200's and other DJ TT

There has been a lot of forum discussion on the 1200G & limited edition GAE models in the last few months. I just happened to watch a documentary on YouTube concerning the "re-boot" of the Technics brand and the lengths that the company and its new CEO (Ms Michiko Ogawa) had gone to were...

    Got a rattle? Check this . . .

I became accustomed to constantly checking my nuts for looseness until I found that lowering the bass output of the sub-woofer to minus values eliminated the tendency. ;^)Going from -2 to -4 solved the problem. The speakers are not by any means close to the front/side walls either but the bass...

Confessing to not cleaning my ELS panels

Doug, Thank you for the encouragement and the reminder :) I cleaned mine today! It had been at least 1 year but in my defence I keep them wrapped up in genuine ML covers (much thicker than the thin white paper ones that usually came with the product). They keep their shape and can be applied or...

From 'Chit' to Shlnola .......comes another turntable !

Dave, VPI seem to be doing good business with their sub-contract work.... Here is a forthcoming example for ML (the other ML i.e. Mark-Levinson) ;^) :D http://www.whathifi.com/news/mark-levinson-celebrates-its-45th-anniversary-its-first-turntable

    Making of vacuum tubes

Remember many years ago, during the "Cold War", a Russian jet fighter was grounded in "the West" due to a fault. It was the Russians state-of-the-art fighter at the time. During its enforced stay they(we) managed to take a peek at the technology inside and discovered to “our” dismay it was full...
