I'm surprised people say any of them aren't "open" sounding. I own the II's and they are so transparent they are ruthless on less and good recordings. I;d highly recommend you experiment with some other upstream gear such as the amp and pre before changing out parts.

Buy some Techspray Licron Crystal ESD (or a couple others) if you are adventurous enough to take the panels apart. You will likely have to replace the diaphragm material though as you likely can't separate the stators without ruining it. I'm in the process of doing this to a pair of CSL's

I have an old Bryston 4Be which I'm running a pair of Monolith II's and it's very good. Transparent and detailed like crazy. Tons of power and great control. I'll probably go for an SST when I change amps unless I find something better in the same price range.
