I am looking a replacement for my Carver ALS's (a large hybrid ribbon speaker with non-powered subs) from the late 1980's. I expected that I would like the ML sound, because I am accustomed to large panels. But I was disappointed by a dealer demo of a pair of Odysseys, which, although extremely clear, sounded almost ethereal. These are at the top of my price range for speakers.

I was not expecting this. Could it have been because of the listening room, which was rather dead? Or perhaps speaker placement? Should I have been able to perceive reflected sound? Or maybe the sound of ML's is very different than that of a ribbon? Or perhaps some of the older models are better?

Any suggestions for where to audition ML in the Los Angeles area?

Thanks.
