Hey guys, I was able to spend the past two days at the 2016 RMAF and will throw a few images and thoughts up here. Unlike years past I didn't take detailed notes, so I won't have a whole lot of pricing or anything but passing thoughts. I didn't have the time, and mostly I just wanted to listen.

In general I didn't hear anything earth shaking. Nothing that made me want to sell the house in order to obtain Audio nirvana. In fact there were a number of rooms where I was frankly underwhelmed. Maybe that's a reflection of the general happiness and enjoyment I'm getting from my current system which I'm listening to as I write this. I can honestly say that it sounds better than 98% of what I heard at the show. The only thing I spent any money on was new music. SoundHound was also my friend in identifying other new music I'll go out and find too. And isn't that pretty much the point anyway?

A few trends I did notice and find interesting. CD players were thin on the ground, some rooms eschewed them altogether. Music servers and streamers were the most prevalent source, closely followed by turntables and open reel decks. Reel to reel software was very present as well with new offerings from Acoustic Sounds and MA Recordings, which is interesting since all of the open reel decks are refurbished units - nobody I am aware of is producing new equipment to support the format. Still, the sound from these decks was consistently superior.

There were more young people at the show than I recall from years past, Millenials. It was good to see a younger generation seeking out better sound. Case in point, a former employee had reached out to me asking if I might show he and his wife a few things at the show as they are looking to build up a system for their new home. They could care less about home theater, they want a dedicated music system. There were a lot of women at the show as well, sometimes even groups made up of just women. I saw families too, including children. Overall though it felt like there was less total attendance than in years past, perhaps due to the fact that the Marriott where the show takes place has been undergoing a complete renovation for the past year that is still not complete. For those who have attended in the past, the mezzanine was completely closed off and Can Jam took place for the most part in a large tent in the parking lot. Luckily we're enjoying some wonderful Indian Summer weather, otherwise that could have been a disaster.

Anyway, on with the Audio pron, I know that's what everyone clicked on this thread for anyway!

More groovy $hit...

The Vivid and Luxman room sounded very good. The Focal room driven by the gigantic Naim Statement amp sounded good too, but the music was total crap and I quickly made my way out.

Peachtree Audio was using their nice new integrated amp to push the Zu Druids to ear splitting levels. Liked the gear, but I had to leave before my head exploded.

Some horned speakers I don't remember the name of, but they were playing awesome music on vinyl and poured me a nice glass of Knob Creek to enjoy while I was in the room. Good sounds enhanced by fine spirits.

PS Audio was showing off all of their new wares including the Bascom King designed pre-amp and monoblocks driving the Scaenna towers nicely. Good sound and a packed room

J-Corder and Technics. Good to see Technics back with new electronics (although they looked very distinctly retro). There's some of those open reel decks I was mentioning.

Aluminous Audio had a very interesting take on resonance control by virtue of suspending and isolating the speaker cabinets via some nylon/Kevlar straps from a robust supporting structure. They sounded good, quite good actually, but I'm not sure they sounded worth the ~$30K asking price.

Electronics were Mytec Manhattan DAC with BAT pre-amp and power amp.

The Jeff Rowland room was static when I visited. Always loved the look of his gear though.

Love that Oracle transport too.

I wish I had taken better notes in this room. I don't know who's speakers these are, but the sound was very good and the overall presentation got my attention. Guess I was too busy enjoying the music to pay close attention to the gear. I do know that TT was VPI, tape deck was Technics and electronics were VAC.

One of my favorite rooms, Nagra electronics, Kronos turntable and Avalon speakers. Very good sound. I'm always mesmerized by the Kronos counter-rotating sub platter and the Nagra casework is like a Swiss watch.

These Ono Audio speakers were impressive for their size and price ($3,000 as I recall). The small "end tables" are subs, but they weren't engaged when I heard them. Available in both a passive and active version (these were the latter), they possessed very intriguing design and sound.

Devialet were showing their rather impressive Phantom speakers. Though diminutive in size they were fully capable of room shuddering bass. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but nonetheless impressive. Now available in three different versions at different power levels - all are active. They were also showing their latest monoblock version of their integrated amps driving Focal speakers.

When I first saw literature about the Devialet, it looked very high tech, but I had to seriously wonder if it would work well.

Did it really sound good compared to other systems?

FYI, I'm curious about the Phantom series, because how portable it is and it's multi-room functionality.

The specs on it look impressive, but it appears that the bass response drops off quite a bit at higher volumes.

Tim, I thought ML was supposed to be there. Did you get a chance to see what they were demo'ing?

If I were to characterize a strongpoint about them it would actually be the bass. It was the sort of bass you literally feel in your gut like a punch. It was very good. The thing I didn't get from them was a serious soundstage or any real localization, but then I wasn't familiar with the recording they were playing when I was in the room. They are very worthy of consideration.

They were showing the Impressions Alan, but they didn't leave much of one with me. I don't remember what the electronics were and I intended to go back for a second visit, wondering if they just needed some settling in. The room just didn't seem to gel, which was why I wanted to return later to see if things improved. Unfortunately I never got the opportunity. I did meet Peter Soderburg in the room, so maybe he will weigh in. There were a fair number of folks in the room when I was there.

Constellation was showing their latest electronics with Magico as speakers. It sounded very good.

My friends Don and Lauralei from Fort Collins Audio had two rooms, this one featuring Parasound electronics and the KEF Blade II speakers. The Blades are one of my favorite speakers and did not disappoint. I went back to the same room later on Saturday and they had swapped out the Parasound amps for some Quicksilver tubed monoblocks and I thought it sounded even more musical.
