They only took about 15 minutes to make, and I had the 3/4" MDF hanging around. I could try other materials, but on the second day I'm still loving how they sound better than before, but I believe that most of that is due to more speaker placement experimentation. It is easier moving them around now.
The biggest difference I'm hearing is in the highs and the sound stage. I got them to sound good set further apart than I had them before.
