I need to determine the voltage from the XLR output on my Sony SCD-1 player. Can I do this at the female XLR output with the unit playing a disc?
Will a basic multimeter with digital read out be acceptable to do this?

Maybe, depends on just how accurate it needs to be.
Most DMM's are only accurate at low frequencies. Some don't have low voltage AC ranges.
Burn or get a test tone CD. Start at about 100Hz.

Most older CD players output about 2 Volts on the RCA output, don't know about the XLR output.

Thanks for the input. My SCD-1 has been upgraded by Vacuum State to their 6+ level. It turns out with the removal of the opamps
the output voltage is only .65mav. Much to low for my Ref 3 that only has 11.8 db gain. When Allen Wright designed the upgrade he was using his own preamp that had a 30db gain. As much as I love this player its time for an change. Soon to be seen on Audiogon.
