Title: Adaptation. (DTS) “SuperBit”

Film Studio: Columbia Tri Star Pictures
Genre: Drama / Comedy

Dazzlingly funny, Spike Jonze directs an unusual off center film. Jonze must have really had some great time working with the great and twisted writer Charlie Kaufman. What a wonderful idea, a film about a screenwriter trying to adapt a book to film. And that is where this story begins – A lovelorn screenwriter turns to his less talented twin brother for help when his efforts to adapt a non-fiction book go nowhere.

Charlie Kaufman is a genius writer without question, but to invent a factious twin brother Donald and even include him in the film credits is amazing creativity and panache. The factious person Donald Kaufman even has his name entered on the Internet Movie Data Base :

Shear genius I’m telling you…. :D The over-all important beauty of Kaufman’s writing of Adaptation is the actor’s can fill in the emotional fearfulness of each predicament / situation the character’s find themselves.

This is somewhat of a true story as Charlie Kaufman (Nicolas Cage) is the real life screenwriter of Adaptation. Charlie attempts to adapt Susan Orlean’s (Meryl Streep) non-fiction book “The Orchid Thief”. Which is the story of John Laoche (Cris Cooper), a plant dealer who clones rare orchids then sells them to collectors. We observe the action of the book as we see Charlie struggle to adapt it into a movie. In addition, there really is a book on the market by Susan Orlean’s called “The Orchid Thief”, which is a non-fictional account of beautiful obsession. Check it out:

There is a kind of ironical juxtaposition here with regards to writing a screenplay for a film about you writing a screenplay for a film. It’s kinda like a dog biting his tail, going round and round… :D IMHO, I think that is what makes Adaptation so much fun. That and the nervous anxiety fear Nicolas Cage gives to Charlie. Cage has Charlie’s idiosyncrasies down to a tee. What a fun character for Cage to portray, as an actor and in a dual role as well. The fictional Donald, is so much fun as he is the opposite of Charlie. Donald being confident and loose in a weird twist of fate Donald’s screenplay, “The Three” is pick-up and is being made into a movie.

Susan Orlean is not what she appears to be either. Meryl Streep is so good at everything she does. She is truly a great American actress of our generation. She gives a vulnerability and confused fascination to Susan. Cris Cooper is at his very best in Adaptation. Cooper give a crazy memorable impression to John and it stays with you even when the film is over and you’re leaving your ML home theater room. Cooper gives John a unique fascination, which we see later in the film why Susan is attracted to him. Cooper received an Academy Award for his supporting performance in this role, which was well deserved.

Adaptation is one of the most memorable, ingenious films ever made in, my never to be too humble opinion (MNTBTHO). This is a film, which the viewer can benefit from seeing more than just once. There is so much to fathom and take in.

The SuperBit version of this film is totally great, due to the wonderful DTS SuperBit transfer to DVD. The swamp scenes are fantastic in SuperBit DTS… My Logans loved every minute of this marvelously funny film. :D

Adaptation is a fearfully fantastic film, and I highly recommend it to one and all…

:D HT relaxed comfortably surrounded in ML bliss, until next time let the movies turn you on…
