Great points, Dan. I especially like the fact that you point out that it doesn't have to be expensive to do a little acoustic treatment. There are some great products offered for reasonable prices, plus there is a lot of info. out there for DIY'ers. The impacts on the sound quality of your system will not be small.
When you are comparing prices of room treatments compared to that new component, it is very inexpensive - especially when comparing cost versus sound improvement.

For instance: You can treat your front wall seam (panels at ear height) for as little as $150. You can treat floor to ceiling in the front corners (8ft ceiling) for around $300, and so on. The results you will get for this little bit of money spent will astound you.

GIK and Real Traps offer great products that provide higher absorption properties at a significant lower price than a product like ASC and their Tube Traps. There are also forums where Ethan, Glen and Bryan visit to answer any and all of your room acoustic questions.
