Hi folks, am about to update my preamp, any & all advice is welcome. Here are the runners & yes I do intend to hear all in my system otherwise it will not be considered. What & why do you think of these? The goal is for an accurate sound with definition & no colorisation at all if possible. With the Summit X's, all I want is detail with the to die for mid range that they come with in spades.:music:

Of the models you've listed, I've owned only the PrimaLuna - I loved it! Very quiet operation, elegant design, with excellent build quality and of course that stellar tube sound.

Hi bzr,

You've listed some good gear. Depending on your budget, I would seriously consider Conrad Johnson.

GG

I'd definitely be having a listen to some ARC. You might find a used LS-26 or Ref 3 around these days? But yes, there's some great preamps in your list.

Hm... I really like that Peachtree Grand Pre - never seen it before.

Seems like really GVFM - has a built-in DAC, and both tube and solid state output. This solves the neurosis of what kind of pre you should have bought. You have both! And if you really value liquid mid-range, and a nice open spacious sound, a tube pre should give you that - particularly if you have solid state power amps.

Furthermore, never underestimate the importance of tube rolling. It can and will turn an average tube pre into a really good one. Also, tubes that work in one pre to give the best results may not in another - it all depends on context. So the only real way to sort it is to try different tubes. You WILL hear significant differences, esp. with Summit Xs, unless, of course, you are tone deaf:D

I'd love to hear the Peachtree. Mind you, I like Accuphase kit too - and ARC - and Luxman and - oh, so many others!:) Always a hard choice.:)

Thanks for that, not, :) that's exactly where I'm at now & really wish I had the pre-amp that I know I will fall in love with already when I hear it. Gee, what a bugger of a thing to have to audition all of those good amps. :D

Yup... life is tough:)

Must have a good dealer or two round your way... that's quite a few demos to go through:D

Let us know how you get on.

At the mo am ringing all the importers & getting them to set it up as some of the dealers just don't want their one & only demo off the floor. I can understand that but when I ask to try it in my system & the reply is , "sure, swing by tonight at 4 pm & drop it back off at 8:30 am the next morning", well, I live 3 hrs away but they can't quite see the schematics in that one.

I've owned three different Pass Labs pre's and have found they are very neutral and without coloration. You might give them a listen as well.

Sorry for hijacking the thread. I am upgrading to a real preamp from my HK3490 and I have an opportunity to get a Demo Primare pre30 at a decent price. Anyone owns or has listened to this preamp can give me his opinion on it? Next on my list is the peach tree grand pre if it doesn't work out for the primare. But it costs twice as much so just try to save some $$$ here :p

you might get a better response by starting a new thread, no-ones been here for a month on this one. p.s. I bought a MOON P7 RS, a very capable & quality pre that has no colour.:music:

this is an area that having so many options is not a good one. For me its a nice problem to have... Good luck for your hunting and as always mentioned -- trust your ear.

I for one already shortlisted my pre-amp option to three remaining:
1. Accuphase C 2420
2. Mcintosh C2500
3. Vincent SA-T1

I did listened to a number of preamp mention above -- at the showroom (in a similar environment to my home) and at my place. I will do another run of listening before I make any decision in the next couple of weeks.
The new preamp is to run my Ethos speaker and it will be power by ARC Tube VS115.

I heard an accuphase system at the Bristol show recently in uk
lovely bit of kit
keep us posted on your findings

I would add ref3/5/5se and a Cary 05 to the list.

I've heard the classe and that's a solid performer as well, especially if you have the classe delta m600 mono.
