My wife's away for a few days, and I have a couple days off, so I thought I'd tweak my room setup/acoustics, and hope she doesn't notice! Here's the domino effect that ensued.
First off, I moved my Summits out another 6" from the wall. I then moved our couch (aka my listening position), and (acoustic nightmare) coffee table 6" forward. That 12" net gain really deepened the soundstage, and snapped the imaging into even better focus. Unfortunately, it messed up the overall feng shui balance of furniture in the room. I kept chanting... "the acoustics must prevail, the acoustics must prevail."
So, I then moved everything on the right side of the room 6" forward as well (including a recliner, side table, floor lamp, 7 ft tall cabinet, and even three wall mounted shelves (which, fortunately, have hidden adjustable mounts). I then moved all the furniture on the left side of the room 3" forward (max I could get on that side).
Now, walking into our family/listening room you sense that something is different, but it's not particularly obvious! Fortunately, my wife will be super busy when she gets back, and I'm hoping it'll be weeks (maybe months!) before she even notices the difference, if at all. If I get away with this, I might try to sneak a C-J CT5 preamp into my setup when she goes away again.
Anybody else ever try something like this?
I'll let you know happens when she gets back. If you don't see any posts from me next week, call the audio police!
