Here's my input. Both the Ascents and the Odyssey have the same frequency response (35Hz-20kHz.), panel size, and sensitivity. The main difference is the additional 8" woofer for the Odyssey thus making the crossover frequency lower by 30 Hz (250 Hz. as compared to 280Hz for the Ascents)for the Odyssey and $2000 at least in the price (over here in the U.S.). If you have a sub and can save by getting the Ascents, then I believe you are convince that you do not need the additional 8" woofer that is $1000 each (here). The 30 Hz. difference in crossover? If you have a chance to compare the backplates of the two, you will find that this is just a matter of the resonant frequency of the filter (pole and zero)being change a bit through a little difference in the capacitor(s) value (the Big Solen cap if you trace the + input from the binding post to the audio transformer). It is possible that the 30 Hz. difference does not come from the crossover alone but a good part of this is from the cabinet interaction (the woofer box is sealed on ML's)because now you have two drivers loading the box volume. Solution? In the future when warranty is not a concern anymore, get a 10" woofer (Peerless, Titanic, Adire etc.) with longer excursion than what ML'uses (this is a very easy task)and the 30 Hz. difference becomes moot. Besides, the 30 Hz. difference is not a difference in sound that we can hear, just a difference of the freq response of the filter. For a resonant freq, to shift 30 Hz or so, you can tell the difference in cap values (considering the inductor is fixed or vice versa) by the ff. equation.

Fc = 1/2 Pi( square root of LC) and both of them will be very small.

So, getting the Odyssey or the Ascents is a matter of your own perception. Is this your final destination speaker-wise? Is this the last time you consider yourself getting a speakers? I do not know if it is a wise decision to get the Ascents than the Odyssey if the difference in price is only $700. That is only $350 per additional woofers right? From this point of view, I'll get the Odysseys. But if the savings is substantially big, then get the Ascents. To me, here in the U.S., I cannot justify an additional woofer and 30 Hz in crossover response is $2000 worth so I got the Ascents. From my 2k savings, I bought a turtable (Teres 255) and very happy with my decision.

...do your research and think about it.....YMMV
