I am a firm believer in power conditioners. Before my HTS-5000 my apartment took the life of 2 DVD players and a Sony receiver(in less than a year). After that I replaced my Sony receiver with an onkyo and decided to try a Monster Power HTS-5000 with a surge protection rating of 2775 joule. my dvd player still works like new two years later. I have now up-graded to a HTPS-7000 Signature with a rating of 3145 joule.

Thay will protect you from every day power surges, but a lighting storm? No way.
